LMP calls on Budapest not to bid for 2024 Olympics
Budapest, August 5 (MTI) – Budapest should not bid for the right to host the 2024 Olympic Summer Games because it has no chance to win and the around 10 billion forints spent on the bid would go to waste, the green opposition LMP party said on Friday.
The party’s representative for Budapest Antal Csardi told a press conference that Hungary is coping with several problems, such as accommodation issues and low salaries, and solving these would require spending thousands of billion forints. This should come before spending money on the Olympics, he added.
The ruling Fidesz will make Budapest a “playground for the oligarchs” and uncontrolled spending could be expected, Csardi said. Additionally, the large development projects for Budapest would further increase the gap between the capital and rural areas, he said.
