A Hungarian lorry driver has died in a devastating motorway accident in Czechia after his vehicle collided with a Romanian-registered truck and both vehicles burst into flames.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning on the D2 motorway near Brno, one of the country’s major transport routes connecting the Czech city with the Slovak border.

Truck reportedly struck barrier at roadworks

According to Czech police, the accident happened at around 4:30 AM near the 11th kilometre marker of the D2 motorway, Novinky.cz reported.

Andrea Cinkotová, spokesperson for the South Moravian Police, said the Hungarian lorry was travelling from Brno towards Břeclav when, for reasons that remain unclear, it struck a concrete barrier at a section of the motorway narrowed by roadworks.

Following the impact, the vehicle reportedly skidded and came to rest across the carriageway, blocking traffic.

Romanian lorry crashed into stranded vehicle

A Romanian-registered lorry approaching from the direction of the Slovak border then collided with the Hungarian truck.

The force of the collision caused both heavy goods vehicles to catch fire. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but neither driver survived the crash.

Authorities confirmed that both the Hungarian and Romanian drivers were pronounced dead.

Motorway closed and traffic diverted

The crash led to the complete closure of the affected section of the D2 motorway. Police diverted traffic while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.

Czech authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.

The identities of the victims have not yet been publicly released.
