Péter Magyar said his team had discovered shredded documents and campaign materials linked to János Lázár and Fidesz inside the basement of the former Ministry of Construction and Transport, now part of the Prime Minister’s Office.
In a video published on Facebook on Sunday, Magyar said colleagues alerted him to “strange things” found during the handover process at the building previously overseen by Lázár. According to the prime minister, staff uncovered at least 15 to 20 sacks filled with shredded documents, alongside boxes of campaign-related items.
Among the materials shown in the footage were leaflets and signs bearing the slogan “Fidesz, the safe choice”, Hungarian flags allegedly used at DPK events, “Lázár Info” promotional materials, and Christmas greeting cards featuring the Lázár family.
Allegations of multiple offences
Magyar argued that the discovery raises suspicion of several potential criminal offences, including illegal party financing. He said authorities should investigate whether state resources or public employees were used to produce, store or distribute party campaign materials inside a government institution.
“The State Audit Office should have examined these matters, and naturally, the police will also investigate,” Magyar said in the video.
The prime minister added that a formal complaint would be filed, and promised to provide updates once police questioning or other investigative actions begin.
Questions over the use of government property
According to Magyar, investigators should determine who ordered the storage and possible production of campaign materials in the ministry building and whether civil servants were instructed to participate in such activities.
The footage released online reportedly shows numerous bags containing shredded paper, as well as stacks of Fidesz-related campaign equipment stored in the basement area.
The allegations have not yet been independently verified, and no official response from Lázár or Fidesz had been published at the time of writing.
Handball match in Veszprém after the announcement
At the end of the video, Magyar said he would travel to Veszprém to support the Hungarian men’s national handball team in their World Championship qualifier against Serbia. Hungary lost the first leg 31–29, according to Index.
