Majority of Hungarians say hospitals are in a catastrophic state, government says all is well
The Pulzus Media Research poll, conducted by 24.hu, shows a devastating picture of what people think about hospitals.
According to this survey:
- 37 percent of people think that patients are treated in unworthy conditions in most hospitals, while another 15 percent believe that the conditions in most hospitals are disastrous, both in terms of the hospital building and its technical equipment.
- 74 percent are dissatisfied with the cleanliness of hospitals, 54 percent say that bathrooms and toilets are dirty and worn, with no toilet seats or paper, soap or hand towels. 32 and 25 percent respectively said that common hospital rooms were not cleaned properly. 14 percent had encountered insects (cockroaches, spiders, bloodsuckers) during their hospital stay.
- 88 per cent are dissatisfied with the hygiene of hospitals. 50 percent know or have heard of someone who has contracted an infection in hospital.
- 56% are either very (41%) or very (15%) afraid that either they or a relative cared for in hospital will get an infection.
- 91 per cent see a clear link between the professional quality of patient care and hospital conditions, i.e. that hygiene deficiencies and the resulting hospital-acquired infections can endanger the health and lives of patients.
- 69% of them think that hospitals should receive more money to improve the operation and maintenance of hospital buildings.
The government says all is well
The government is committed to improving Hungary’s healthcare system, Bence Rétvári, interior ministry parliamentary state secretary, said on Monday, noting that next year the health budget will be boosted by 425 billion forints (EUR 1.13bn) compared with last year.
Healthcare spending has grown from 1,100 billion forints to 3,200 billion in the past decade, Rétvári said at an awards ceremony held marking Semmelweis Day, adding that the number of doctors had also risen appreciably, with 1,000-1,500 graduating from medical universities each year, 1.5 times more than ten years ago.
While in 2010, there were close to 34,000 doctors, this has risen to more than 40,000, while those applying to work abroad has fallen to one-third, he said.
Retvari noted the positive effects on the ban on so-called gratuity payments to doctors which had distorted the health-care system for around 70 years, adding that at the end of last year only 1 percent of Hungarians saw gratuity as a problem.

Orban and his Government – what “Gall” again the mis-truth and fabrication of FACT, that plainly said are Lies, driven by the FALSENESS in the use of PROPAGANDA.
Like the cataclysmic MESS that we KNOW that Education is in, through the Orban “stuff” ups – the cover-ups, lies and fabrication of truth, the ABUSE literally of Educators being given NO respect by Orban and his Government, that see’s Education all of its componentry, through LACK of INVESTMENT by the Orban Government, the MESS / Shambles that is Education in Hungary.
The similarities of Hospitals likened to Education – broken promises, mis-truths, fabrication of FACT, again LIES – the “ducking and weaving” – blame on others – shrouded in PROPAGANDA – neglect of NEEDED Investment – see’s our Hospitals in an overall DIABOLICAL state.
The Orban Government – through its own DOINGS – is CASHLESS – on the cusp of being INSOLVENT, that see’s FACTUALLY Hungary – we are deepening into a RECESSION – that the avoidance of sinking LOWER Deeper into Harder Times – near an IMPOSSIBILITY.
Reports near on Daily – in ALL major areas of the componentry – Financial & Economic in Hungary – the CORE areas – all continue to TREND downwards.
Hospitals, Health Services – all the areas under this NEED of Citizens, that have been abused neglected by the Orban Government and Education – the BILLIONS of FORINTS to bring both these categories – NEEDS of a 21st century society, that to this day FUNCTION more likened to 19th century times, were is the FUNDING – the INVESTMENT of billions of FORINTS going to come from?
PRIORITIZATION by Orban exampled building Sporting Stadiums a prime example of FAILURE in a GOVERNMENTS responsibility to its CITIZENS – instead of the NEEDS of MILLIONS of us – HUNGARIANS in better more modern Health Services – Hospitals and better EDUCATIONAL facilities.
Orban they are deepening into an ABYSS as a Government and what they have RETURNED in 14 years they have been in Government for us in MILLIONS to live in – our daily lives and into the “Scary” future – DEPLORABLE.
THIS government will keep on saying that our hospitals are in a very good state as long as it can spend more money on self-glorification projects like sport stadia and financing and hosting world sports events.
…Just wondering how long it will take for our sport-loving PM to arrange a leg of Tour de France to be held somewhere around Lake Balaton. 😉
That’s the thing with socialized healthcare: For the government (whether Left or Right or anything else), everything is okay or not (much) more money is needed; for everyone else, there is NEVER enough money even if you’d sink the nation’s entire budget into it. Same old story the world over. The the globalist-socialists were in power, the situation would be exactly the same with the hospitals; it’s just that they’d be saying everything is great while Fidesz would be claiming it’s a catastrophe. Shrug…
To my absolute astonishment, spending 12 days in a Public Hospital, in the walking distance, from Keleti Station, one of the 5 male patients, in a room, that I would view as a Double Bed-room-size, no air-conditioning, no call bell for nursing staff attention, the food, repulsive, and my need of emergency surgery at 11pm in the evening, that elevators “out of order” – and needed me walk from ward on 3rd level to 4th level, then after operation appendix/bowel abyss, spend the night in Intensive Care till next mid morning the lifts became operational again – quite 3rd World.
Indian gentlemen in my room, mid 20’s – we talked about the room and hospital appearance and conditions, he confirmed to me, from his city of birth in India being Mumbai, that the Budapest, Hungary Hospital was APPALING to what is in Mumbai as a Public Hospital.
The opinion or response by the Prime Minister of Hungary – Victor Orban and his Government, that ALL is WELL in Hospitals and Health Care Services in Hungary – my experience FABRICATION of the Truth.
The majority of Hungarians can’t afford private healthcare.
NO matter (left, right or whatever) which ever political group is in Government, it is their duty of care to make sure that our people are afforded the equal to any other EU member State’s health sytem.
Admittedly, we’ll never catch up to most of them, but our Goverment should make it a priority rather than the over the top self-glorifying sports projects that abound year after year.
