Running Track Get New Layer In Margaret Island

Budapest

The most popular running track of Budapest is the one hidden in the tranquil surroundings of Margit Island; this cushioned 5,2 kilometers long running track is about to get fully renovated.

Recently the Department of Buildings (Városépítési Főosztály) has confirmed that from September of 2014 the running track will enjoy a full reconstruction. The changers will happen not only to the rubber coating, but also to the width of it. Some major improvements will follow: changing cabins with shower facilities and lavatories will appear at certain points of Margit Island.

According to the reconstruction plan several navigation details will be added, marking the kilometers left until the finish or start point of the track. For more convenience of the athletes from September the mileage will be counted from both sides of the island: from Arpad bridge and Margit bridge, respectively.

During the last couple of years there was only one significant problem – pedestrians and athletes did not have enough space to avoid each other. This certainly caused a tension between runners and people who simply wish to enjoy a forest green area of the park, while walking along the Danube. That is why after the renovation the width of the track will become 140cm (in some areas even 180 cm) more.

In the areas of intersection between the running track and the main road, used by cars and other vehicles, road signs will help navigation, alongside the pedestrian crossing.

A part of reconstruction process will start in June of 2014, and will happen on the Pest side of the island. Later on, during the summer months concrete roads of Margit Island will be repaired.
