Mezőkövesd join Gyirmót in next season’s NB1
Attila Pintér’s Mezőkövesd-Zsóry SE will be playing NB I football next season after a comprehensive 4-0 home victory over relegated Dunaújváros PASE helped maintain the two-point lead they held over third-place Zalaegerszegi TE going into the final round of matches. Promotion rounded off a double celebration for the club as they inaugurated their now fully renovated stadium in front of 4,300 delirious fans.
Knowing that three points would guarantee them top-flight football for the 2016/2017 season, any nerves the yellow and blues may have had were settled in the first minute when András Vági scored following a corner. The men from Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén would be two up by the 20th minute, Bence Sós tucking the ball under Csaba Dániel in the Dunaújváros goal after being set up by Lóránd Szatmári. Former Ferencváros man Bence Tóth added a third before half-time and then Vági a fourth early in the second period to all but render Zalaegerszeg’s 5-0 victory over Ajka irrelevant.
Mezőkövesd finish second, two points ahead of Zalaegerszegi TE in third, thereby joining runaway NB II champions Gyirmót SE in the top division next season. The team from the outskirts of Győr were already crowned NB II champions last month, finally gaining top-flight status after years of knocking on the door.
The line up for next season’s OTP Bank Liga is now complete, the twelve teams comprising the division being Ferencvárosi TC, Videoton FC, Debreceni VSC, MTK Budapest, Szombathelyi Haladás, Újpest FC, Paks FC, Budapest Honvéd FC, Diósgyőri VTK, Vasas SC, Gyirmót SE and Mezőkövesd-Zsóry FC. The new season is scheduled to kick-off on 16th July.
