Mini language lesson #8: Unique Hungarian words vol.2
You seemed to really like our previous article in this series, so we’d thought we’d put together a part 2, because there are more unique Hungarian words than you would think. These are just as fun and special as the ones mentioned in the previous episode 🙂
We still can’t get our head around the curiosities of the Hungarian language and how it is possible to express certain things in completely different ways from how other nations do. Why do we say “area-picture” instead of map or “animal-garden” instead of zoo? The answers are sometimes logical, while they are completely mysterious in other cases.
Keep in mind that we are not linguists in any way, we’re just as dazzled by the curiosities of the Hungarian language as foreigners are. So this series doesn’t aim to explain the etymology of words, it’s more a fun take on our language. We try to bring Hungarian closer to you with witty learning cards made by Daily magyar, a language-enthusiast person, whose posts give an insight into the complexity of the Hungarian grammar. But don’t worry, it’s all done in an easy-going way, so that it can make learning fun.
For now, enjoy our second photo gallery of unique Hungarian words:
