Idea Institute has published the latest public opinion poll regarding the popularity of politicians in Hungary on their Facebook page on Thursday. Tisza politicians are in front, but some of the results may be surprising for many.
It’s not Péter Magyar who is most popular
According to the results of the questionnaire-based survey conducted in early May, the list of popular politicians in May was – probably to nobody’s surprise – led by ministers of the Tisza government and Prime Minister Péter Magyar, but not him, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Anita Orbán is the most popular politician in Hungary.
In recent weeks, the popularity of Dávid Vitézy, a Budapest politician from the Podmaniczky Movement who became a minister, has improved the most. Based on data from the Idea Institute, the report noted that while there is only a one-point difference in the scores of the Tisza politicians, the fact remains that the top of the popularity list is currently occupied not by the newly elected prime minister, but by Foreign Minister Anita Orbán, whose popularity rating stands at 55 percent.
In the first half of May, the popularity ratings of Minister of Economy and Energy István Kapitány and Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy were also slightly higher than that of the prime minister.
The Prime Minister has more adversaries than anybody in the new government
According to the Idea survey results, half of those who evaluated Péter Magyar like him (51 percent), so the camp of those who sympathize with the prime minister is currently among the largest. However, his popularity index is lower because 42 percent of respondents do not like him, and this percentage is significantly lower in the cases of István Kapitány (40 percent), Anita Orbán (39 percent), and especially Dávid Vitézy (34 percent).
Dávid Vitézy’s popularity rating is 6 points higher than it was before the election. Among the Tisza politicians surveyed, Zoltán Tarr is considered the least popular; he was the first to support Péter Magyar’s initiative.

Tisza government’s least popular figure is still far more liked than any Fidesz member
The survey says the current balance of power in domestic politics is best illustrated by the fact that even Zoltán Tarr, who is relatively unpopular even within the Tisza Party, is significantly more popular than the Fidesz members, who trail far behind the Tisza government’s representatives in the popularity rankings.
They reported that while roughly half of respondents view the Tisza Party’s ministers positively, the vast majority do not like opposition politicians. According to the summary, the majority does not like Viktor Orbán either: 62 percent of those who evaluated the politician have a negative opinion of the former prime minister, though one-third (34 percent) still like him.
The assessment of one of the least popular Fidesz politicians surveyed, János Lázár, is even slightly worse: two-thirds of respondents do not sympathize with him (67 percent), and only just over a quarter like him (28 percent), according to the Idea Institute.
