Among others, the Hungarian language is known for having some peculiar words that uniquely stand out in the European continent. When illustrated with a map, it becomes apparent that we stand alone in the centre of Europe with some of our “weird” words. We have already presented this oddity through wine, beer and police, and now we bring another creative etymology map from Imgur to teach you the word church in Hungarian.

As you can see, the little blue spot in the middle of the map is Hungary. Templom comes from the Latin “templum”, which stands for “shrine, temple, area for auspices”.

  1. Did the pagan Magyar not have a name for “church” before converting to the Roman church & language? Did they use the Greek term when they tried the Orthodox religion prior to Catholicism? Was there a Magyar word for church prior to settlement in the Carpathian Basin area? Do the Csongo have a separate word for church or do they use the Slavic term?

  2. That’s avert interesting question , made me think.WishI know.Born in Hungary Budapest.
