No end in sight: another prestigious Hungarian hotel closes

Szeged has become poorer with a distinguished hotel. Several catering establishments in the south-eastern Hungarian city have already closed due to increased overheads.

“Dear Guests! We regret to inform you that Tiszavirag Hotel and Cafe will be closed for an indefinite period of time from 10th of October, 2022. Thank you for the time we spent together!” Hotel Tiszavirág wrote on their Facebook page on 8 October.

The umpteenth victim

The reason for the closure was not disclosed. However, in recent weeks, several places in Szeged have announced that they are forced to close due to increased utility costs, szegeder.hu reports. By the beginning of September, the pastry shop Süti nem süti had already closed, and the future of the Fehértói Halászcsárda (Fehértó Fisherman’s Tavern) was in doubt after they received a HUF 5 million (EUR 11,700) electricity bill, szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu writes.

With energy prices rising dramatically, more and more people in the tourism sector are facing difficulties. Earlier, Hotel Lövér in Sopron announced that after 39 years, it will close permanently on 1 November due to “unfavourable external circumstances”.

Later, the director of one of the most beautiful luxury hotels in Hungary, Kastélyhotel Sasvár, which has been operating as a hotel since 1996, announced that it would close between 1 November and 1 December “due to the horrific gas and electricity prices”.
