Orban Asks European Council to Protect Christians in Iraq
(MTI) – Prime Minister Viktor Orban asked President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy in a letter on Tuesday to take action in protection of the Christians in Iraq, head of the prime minister’s press office Bertalan Havasi said.
The Hungarian government is deeply concerned about the brutal violence that threatens the very existence of the Christian community in Iraq, Orban said in the letter. The situation is increasingly intolerable and the European Council must make a resolute response, he added.
Orban asked Rompuy to include in the agenda of the European Council’s next meeting at the end of August a discussion of the Christian community’s situation in Iraq. He confirmed that Hungary supports all solutions that guarantee the existence and future of the Christian community.
