Orbán cabinet issued reaction on opposition’s child abuse claims

The ministry of justice has rejected “false claims” by Klára Dobrev, the leader of opposition Democratic Coalition, concerning a youth offender institution in Budapest.

The ministry said in a statement on Thursday that the Szolo Street institution was being thoroughly investigated, emphasising that the probe had drawn no connection to any government member. Dobrev’s remarks “concerning the implication of government members” are “groundless … slander”, the ministry added.

The ministry also said that they would initiate legal proceedings.

DK wanted parliament committee to investigate case of youth offender institution

The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) wanted a parliamentary committee to investigate the case of the director of a youth offender institution suspected of child abuse, the party’s leader said on Friday.

The director of the Szolo Street youth offender facility and his partner were arrested at the end of May on suspicion of human trafficking and forced labour.

Klára Dobrev told an online press briefing that DK had initiated setting up an investigative committee of MPs to examine the “Fidesz pedophile scandal”, insisting it was necessary to uncover “who the hypocritical politicians who claim to be Christian conservatives … are”, insisting that “state and police leaders” had “turned a blind eye to these crimes”.

If Fidesz politicians blocked the committee from convening, they would be admitting their guilt, Dobrev said. “By covering up their cases, they are protecting people who commit sexual abuse against children,” she added.
