The prospect of Orbán Viktor at the White House has returned to the Hungarian political agenda after an American newspaper reported that the former prime minister visited both the White House and the US State Department during a recent trip to the United States. However, it remains unclear whether Orbán personally met President Donald Trump.

According to the American news outlet Washington Examiner, Orbán made an unannounced stop in Washington while in the United States for matches at the football World Cup. The American report said a source familiar with the visit had confirmed that Orbán entered both institutions.

What is known about Orbán Viktor at the White House

No official account of the reported visit has been published by the White House or the State Department. The identities of the people Orbán met and the subjects discussed have also not been disclosed.

Orbán, who remains president of Hungary’s Fidesz party, said after returning home that he had held important meetings during his American trip, including unofficial discussions. He declined to identify the participants, adding further uncertainty to reports of Orbán Viktor at the White House.

The claims follow contradictory statements from senior Fidesz figures. Zsolt Németh, deputy chairman of the Hungarian Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, had said Orbán was expected to meet Trump. Bertalan Havasi, Fidesz’s communications director, subsequently denied that such a meeting was planned, insisting that Orbán’s trip was a private visit centred on the World Cup. The available reports therefore confirm neither a face-to-face Trump–Orbán meeting nor any formal negotiations. They indicate only that Orbán reportedly visited key US government buildings during his stay.

Orbán’s changed political position

The trip was Orbán’s first known visit to Washington since losing Hungary’s parliamentary election on 12 April 2026. Péter Magyar’s centre-right Tisza party won 141 of the National Assembly’s 199 seats, ending Orbán’s uninterrupted 16-year period as prime minister. Orbán was later re-elected as Fidesz president and is now the leader of Hungary’s largest opposition party.

For international readers, this change makes the reported White House visit particularly significant. Orbán no longer represents the Hungarian government, meaning any meetings would have involved the leader of an opposition party rather than the country’s serving prime minister.

A long history between Trump and Orbán

Trump and Orbán have maintained close political relations for several years. Trump received Orbán for an official bilateral meeting at the White House in May 2019, when the two leaders discussed NATO, trade, energy and security cooperation. Trump praised Orbán’s record and his approach to border protection during the public portion of the meeting.

Their relationship continued after Trump left office. Orbán visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida in March 2024 and publicly supported his campaign to return to the presidency. The two met again in July 2024, following Orbán’s self-described Ukraine “peace mission”, and discussed possible ways of ending the war. A further Mar-a-Lago meeting took place in December 2024.

After Trump returned to the White House, he hosted Orbán for a bilateral lunch on 7 November 2025. Official White House photographs showed the two leaders meeting in the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room alongside senior members of the US administration.

Vice President JD Vance also appeared with Orbán in Budapest on 7 April 2026, just five days before the Hungarian election. The White House presented the visit as part of a broader US–Hungarian partnership covering energy, technology and security.

Many analysts believe that one of Orbán’s biggest mistakes was to assume that Hungarians were interested in the US Vice-President and Orbán’s battle against the EU. Voters sent a strong message in the election, and Viktor Orbán, who had been in power for 16 years, suffered a major defeat.

Why the reported visit matters

Should the Washington Examiner report be officially confirmed, the visit would suggest that Orbán retains access to senior political circles in Washington despite his election defeat. His personal relationship with Trump could remain an important element of his international political influence and his domestic strategy as leader of the Hungarian opposition.

Until the White House, the State Department or Fidesz provides further details, however, the central question remains unanswered: Orbán may have entered the White House, but there is still no verified evidence that he met Donald Trump during this particular trip.
