Over 33,000 asylum applications in Q1
Budapest, April 7 (MTI) – The immigration office has received more than 33,000 applications for asylum in the first three months of 2015, the director general of the office said on Tuesday.
An increase in the number of applications began first in 2013 and the trend is expected to continue this year, Zsuzsanna Vegh told public TV channel M1.
Based on this, “we expect to face a rather difficult year,” she said.
Immigrants have been flocking from war zones around the world to Europe, including Hungary, where 150-200 people arrive per day on average, said Vegh.
According to figures cited by the programme, the number of applications for asylum had increased twenty-fold over the past three years.
There were 42,000 applications submitted last year alone, compared with only some 2,000 in 2012.
