The reason is clear: the drug not only lowers blood sugar, it also suppresses appetite, making it popular for weight loss, even among people without diabetes. For example, tennis star Serena Williams was recently suspected of using the drug to achieve her noticeable weight loss.

While it’s unclear whether she has, many are using the drug for off-label weight loss purposes, fueling major demand and even periodic shortages. Alongside this trend is a rise in reports of unusual side effects, including apparent penis enlargement.
