PM Orbán’s main challenger, Péter Magyar, on unbelievable poll results: PM Orbán in serious danger

Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party have been leading the polls in Hungary for months, following their 30% result in last June’s European Parliamentary elections and the election of seven MEPs to Brussels. Mr Magyar is currently walking from Budapest to Nagyvárad (Oradea, Romania) to protest against Prime Minister Orbán’s endorsement of the anti-Hungarian Romanian presidential candidate, George Simion. He spoke to Klubrádió in an interview about a new poll showing an astonishing lead for Tisza.

According to Szeretlek Magyarország, Magyar gave an interview to the media outlet about his pilgrimage to Nagyvárad—the city of Saint Ladislaus (1077–1095), often called the ‘Paris on the banks of the Peța’—which was one of the most important cultural and intellectual hubs for Romanians, Hungarians, and Jews during the era of the Kingdom of Hungary.

Magyar is travelling there to protest against Prime Minister Orbán’s endorsement of the anti-Hungarian Romanian presidential candidate George Simion and to show solidarity with Hungarians living abroad. We reported HERE what happened and how Orbán’s endorsement affected the election campaign and its outcome on Sunday.

Magyar: Tisza leads with 52%

The Tisza leader spoke about a secret poll commissioned by a company which regularly orders such surveys ahead of Hungarian general elections. He stated that the results had reached Prime Minister Orbán’s desk, but the government chose not to disclose them.

According to Magyar, the poll showed a substantial lead for Tisza: 52% of Hungarian voters would support the party in a general election held this Sunday, while Fidesz would receive only 34%. Given Hungary’s constituency-based electoral system, such a result would translate into a supermajority for Péter Magyar and his political movement.

He claimed the government and the prime minister are now panicking over the poll results. “They’re acting like a child whose toy has been taken away,” he added.

Prime Minister Orbán and the Fidesz leadership argue that no change in governance policy is necessary—only their online communication needs improvement, as the Tisza Party is outperforming them in that area. As a response, Orbán launched a so-called “Fighters’ Club” at a party event on Sunday, inviting 10,000 Fidesz supporters. The goal of this new team is to outperform Tisza supporters on social media. We reported  HERE that one member of the team had previously been convicted of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12. Media reports state that he was dismissed from the team after the scandal emerged.
