Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar was targeted by a man who threw wine at him during a visit to a harvest festival in Szekszárd on Saturday. Magyar shared footage of the incident on Facebook and accused the man of being an Orbán supporter, responding to the confrontation with a sarcastic remark about the wasted wine.
Magyar stopped at the Szekszárd Harvest Days on his way back from Pécs, where he had addressed supporters earlier on Saturday. Magyar’s speech in Pécs had included a pointed warning to billionaire Lőrinc Mészáros over the government’s planned takeover of a major motorway concession. He also accused the previous government of neglecting the city and contributing to its financial difficulties, while raising the possibility of partially waiving this year’s solidarity tax for local councils.
According to his Facebook post, he visited the festival at the invitation of local residents and spent time speaking with people and taking photographs.
The visit took an unexpected turn when a man threw wine towards the prime minister. Magyar subsequently published a video of the encounter:
Magyar’s reaction to the incident
In his post, Magyar described the man as a former supporter of Viktor Orbán who had gathered enough courage to confront him after drinking. He suggested that the man had been upset by the atmosphere at the festival and the people approaching him for conversations and photographs. The prime minister also joked that the Szekszárd wine had gone to waste.
He ended his Facebook post with another sarcastic remark:
“At least he didn’t chain me to a fence, as they teach you on HírTV.”
The prime minister was referring to remarks made in HírTV’s Paláver phone-in programme. During Friday’s broadcast, a caller suggested chaining the prime minister to the railing of a stadium stand. Earlier in the week, another caller had spoken about finding a sniper to “eliminate” him.
As we reported earlier, HírTV subsequently dismissed presenter Nóra Palányi for failing to interrupt the latter call immediately, apologised and launched an internal investigation.
