PM candidate Péter Magyar: We have reclaimed our homeland! – Hungary election 2026 – UPDATE

“The Tisza Party not only won the election, but it appears it will hold a two-thirds majority for the next four years,” said Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party and Hungary’s next prime minister.
My fellow countrymen, Hungarians, we did it. The Tisza and Hungary have won this election. Not just by a little, but by a lot—in fact, by a great deal
—Péter Magyar began his victory speech late Sunday evening in Batthyány Square, across from the Parliament.
He continued: “Together, we have ousted the Orbán regime and liberated Hungary; we have reclaimed our homeland.”
Our victory is visible not from the moon, but from every Hungarian window. Whether it’s the smallest mud-brick house or a high-rise apartment building, in the city or the countryside, it’s visible from every window
—he added.
In the history of democratic Hungary, no party has ever received such a strong mandate as Tisza. He is talking about 3.3 million votes, which have given them a mandate to govern, and all signs point to them having a strong two-thirds majority in the new National Assembly. This mandate is what will allow the transition to be as efficient and peaceful as possible.
Today you performed a miracle; today Hungary made history
– he added, after which his supporters began chanting “Ria, Ria, Hungária.”
He said that, despite facing a complete headwind, they managed to achieve such a great victory as millions of “Ludas Matyis,” even though the ruling party deployed its entire apparatus against them, attempting to destroy the Tisza in a manner reminiscent of a one-party state. The Hungarian people have spoken, and truth has triumphed over lies.
If you missed - Orbán: We lost, and I congratulated the winner!
We won today because the Hungarian people did not ask what their country could do for them, but rather asked what they could do for their country. And you did not just ask; you also found the answer and took the action demanded by the homeland
—so said Magyar.
Today, Hungarians said no to deception and betrayal. Two years ago, a few people set out, and in the end, love triumphed in the battle between David and Goliath, because in the end, love always triumphs. He expressed his gratitude that his voters had heeded the biblical advice: “Do not be afraid!”
How many times and how many people told us that it wasn’t worth going to the countryside, that we couldn’t leave the capital. How many times did we hear that we had to come to terms with His Majesty’s opposition, that we had to make deals, because there was no other way. But of course there is—today you have proven that it is indeed possible!
– he continued.
He called March 15, 1848, October 23, 1956, and now April 12, 2026, moments of grace.
“Let this too be a date inscribed in gold in the history of Hungarian freedom—not the victory of one party over another, but the victory of the Hungarians over those who betrayed them, the victory of freedom over those who betrayed them. Let this be a victory for all Hungarians today, for those who voted for Tisza and for those who did not,” he remarked.
Every Hungarian feels in their heart that this is a wonderful, shared victory, because the homeland has decided and wants to live again, he added.
He wants a country where citizens can count on their government, where everyone is entitled to proper healthcare, a carefree childhood, and a dignified old age. A country where what matters is not who knows whom, but who a person is and what kind of person they are. Let Hungary be a country where one can come home. He also thanked his compatriots abroad for the tens of thousands who voted and asked them to move back home, because every Hungarian is needed.
The task is enormous, but we Hungarians love big challenges
– he declared.
In his view, it is a wonderful thing to be Hungarian today; everyone longs for the unification of the nation, and “we are setting out on this path today.” The Tisza government will represent all Hungarians, because we must not make distinctions between Hungarians, for that is a sin. For whoever divides the people must step down from power.
He asked his voters to celebrate today and join them on this shared path. They will earn that trust every hour, every minute, he promises.
I call on the prime minister to act as a caretaker government starting today and not to take any measures that would tie the hands of the next government
— he told Orbán.
“If any questions arise during the transition period, please contact me; you have my phone number,” he said, noting that Orbán had already congratulated him by phone.
“I also call on the President of the Republic to ask me to form a government, then step down from office, and I call on all the puppets to do the same,” he stated, then listed who he was referring to:
- the President of the Supreme Court,
- the President of the National Judicial Office,
- the President of the Constitutional Court,
- the President of the State Audit Office,
- the President of the Hungarian Competition Authority,
- and the head of the Media Authority.
He announced that the system of checks and balances will be restored, and Hungary will join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
They will rebuild and, if possible, expand the cooperation of the Visegrád Four.
My first trip will take me to Poland to strengthen the thousand-year-old Polish-Hungarian friendship. My second trip will take me to Vienna. And my third will be to Brussels to secure the EU funds to which Hungarians are entitled
– he said.
He spoke by phone with the German chancellor, the Croatian prime minister, the NATO secretary general, the president of the European People’s Party and the European Commission, as well as the French president, but dozens of other European leaders are awaiting his call.
