Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony inaugurated 135 low-platform Mercedes-Benz Conecto Next Generation buses in a ceremony on Thursday.
He called the “rejuvenation of the capital city’s bus fleet of historic importance … a development of a scale unseen in the past 30 years.” The mayor said the coronavirus pandemic had changed transport habits. “In order to encourage as many people as possible to make use of public transport we must make public transport more competitive than cars,” he said.
Karacsony said developing public transport was the best way of emerging from the current energy crisis.
Tibor Bolla, CEO of Budapest transport company BKV, said the city is purchasing 35 of the buses and leasing the rest.
