Drunk driving crash in Budapest tram tunnel halts service for hours – Photos

A startling incident took place on Saturday night in Budapest when an SUV driver, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, drove onto the elevated tram tracks beneath the iconic Szabadság hÃd (Liberty Bridge). Designed exclusively for trams, these tracks and tunnels are not intended for regular vehicle traffic—and this drunk driving crash served as a stark reminder of why.
A Dangerous Choice: drunk driving crash
On Saturday evening, the SUV driver—heavily intoxicated—entered the tram tunnel beneath Szabadság hÃd, BKK (Budapest Public Transport company) said. They managed to travel almost the entire tunnel length before crashing into a wall. Although no personal injuries occurred, the outcome could have been far worse. The crash caused substantial damage to the vehicle and forced the suspension of the downtown section of the 2 tram line for several hours. Removing the car required a crane, as driving or pushing it off the tracks was impossible.

Budapest’s Tram 2 is popular among locals and tourists and is known for its scenic route along the Danube. The accident stopped the service for an extended period on Saturday night, creating inconveniences for travelers and additional work for local authorities and public transport operators.
