PM Orbán arrived in Washington while NATO allies call him Putin’s useful idiot

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has arrived in Washington, DC., where he will take part in a three-day NATO summit, the PM’s press chief said on Tuesday.

The prime minister’s plane, like those of the other NATO leaders, landed at Andrews Air Force Base, Bertalan Havasi told MTI. Orbán is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with the leaders of NATO member states.

After Orbán’s “peace mission” in Moscow and Russia’s missile attack against Ukrainian hospitals treating children suffering from cancer, Jan Lipavský, Czechia’s foreign minister, referred to Orbán as a useful idiot of President Putin in a tweet shared on X. Lipavský also wrote about the Washington NATO summit, which, he believes, will “push for a long-term strategy to contain Russia.”

Helmut Brandstätter, an Austrian liberal MEP, called Orbán a clown in a tweet. “Look at the pictures of the children’s hospital in Kyiv and shut up”, he wrote.

Orbán sets historic record

Hungary took the EU presidency last week, and Orbán has been busy meeting some of the world’s top leaders in recent days. On 2 July, he visited President Zelensky in Kyiv, then went to Moscow, Beijing and now arrived in Washington. That is a historic record in such a short time.

Experts believe that even though some world leaders do not agree with Orbán’s position on many issues, they find his opinion interesting enough to meet him on last-minute visits.

In Washington, Orbán is expected to talk with President Joe Biden and even former President Trump in the following days. Zoltán Kiszelly, the political director of Századvég, thinks Orbán will not find supporters for his peace mission, Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid, wrote.

Orbán cabinet: ceasefire, peace talks only solution to Ukraine war

A ceasefire and peace talks are the only solution to the Ukraine war, the foreign minister said on Tuesday. Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook that the situation was getting increasingly severe in the Ukraine-Russia war, with recent “heartbreaking” events involving children, “and this can be expected to deteriorate further”.

“There are more and more weapons and the war propaganda is getting stronger, with a severe looming danger of escalation,” he said. “We have been warning of this for weeks.”

“There’s only one solution; there’s only one way to stop the senseless destruction and massacre; there’s only one way to save people’s lives and prevent more severe developments: a ceasefire and peace talks”, Szijjártó said.

Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing, Washington: the government says they are on a peace mission:

He added that this was the reason why the Hungarian leadership was setting off “on a peace mission” and paying a visit to Washington, DC.

“We will represent this stance at the NATO summit: there is no solution on the battlefield,” he said. “It is impossible to comprehend why they cannot accept this.”

“Yet, the draft resolutions for the next three days demonstrate a total lack of understanding, with NATO set to launch a mission in support of Ukraine,” he said. “We will stay out of this; we won’t supply weapons, we won’t provide troops, and we will not take part in financing,” he added.

  1. Orban is tired of the war and financial costs. War monger west wants to defeat Russia. The real victims are the Ukrainians and EU and US taxpayers. This war is about power. Who will rule the world, the EU, US or China. There was an article on Microsoft Outlook of India’s Prime Minister Modi in Russia. The world’s most populous and productive nations, India, China and add on Russia forming a block is not very promising for Ukraine’s future or win. Ukraine’s loss will also be the EU’s, US’ UK’, Canada’s loss.

  2. First of all, anyone who objects to talking to somebody, especially with a view to try to end a war, is not just on the wrong side of history, but is simply insane.

Secondly, “contain Russia”? Which world are these clowns living in?! Russia’s economy is roaring ahead, while the European countries’ is pretty much flatlined. All the cockamamie sanctions and and hamfisted attempts to isolate Russia have not made even a dent in Russia’s economic resilience; they have only harmed US in the West.

Call Orban a “useful idiot”? Well, a bit better than being useLESS idiots like these people.

  3. CREDIBILITY of Orban continues to be in it’s deepening EROSION process.
    Respectability – SHATTERED rightly.
Won’t find a FRIEND at these (3) three day’s of the NATO summit.
Orban, will be representative of a Menhir – a “lone” standing stone / individual – in THERE “disullusional” purpose.

  4. Considering all of this – should Hungary ever be attacked by Russia or a vassal state, we should be precluded from invoking Article 4.

Entirely reasonable, given the position of our Politicians. And Russia and vassals … they would never attack us, right? No harm, no foul!

  5. Of course this article doesn’t tell the whole story because the whole story has not played out yet. But, those of us who expect our PM and FM to change their “peace” rhetoric because of yet another Russian atrocity are in for a big disappointment; albeit not a bit unexpected. Two hundred years of Pax Romana was a peace of the conquered under the heals of Rome. Russia has its own cloned version of this kind of peace, “Pax Romanov”, Peace under the Russian boot. Hungarian leadership is campaigning hard for this version of Putin’s Peace.

Name calling aside. Hungarian leadership is wrong in their approach. When atrocities and murder occur daily it is far past time to do something, and it is not forsaking peace to take action. A very wise man once said, “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them and do nothing”. The leadership of Hungary has repeatedly and emphatically stated, “We will stay out of this; we won’t supply weapons, we won’t provide troops, and we will not take part in financing,” The short version is that they will do nothing.

  6. Orbán is literally the only adult in the room when it comes to NATO and EU warmongering

  7. The headline of this article and the quotes are entirely accurate. Orban is the worst PM Hungary has had since the fall of communism. He must have a sore jaw from all that sucking he does on his visits to his love interest Putin.

  8. The Orban government has resolutely opposed the EU aristocrats politicians who follow the wishes of Western globalists, neoconservatives, and warmongers, and has consistently called for a ceasefire and peace despite pressure from them. I respect and strongly support this political stance.
Among intelligent Japanese people who are interested in international politics, the number of fans of Prime Minister Orban is steadily increasing. These intelligent Japanese people are very envious of Hungary, which has a leader like Prime Minister Orban.
The reason is that the current Kishida administration in Japan has been repeating policies that betray the country and abandon the people, in other words, bad governance and foolish policies, without any consideration for the lives of the Japanese people. Prime Minister Kishida is without a doubt the most unpopular prime minister in Japanese history.
Compared to the current Japanese Prime Minister and Cabinet, it can be said that the Hungarian government is at least 10 times better.
The actions of Hungary, who holds the EU presidency, in this “peace mission” are absolutely correct. We do not want to get involved in this pointless, farcical proxy war any longer. A ceasefire is necessary as soon as possible.
I warmly support Prime Minister Orbán and Foreign Minister Szijjártó. Please keep up the good work and never give in to the pointless slander of the Western globalists, neocons, warmongers, and their henchmen.

  9. Japanese Hungarian fan –
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto – Marshal Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy and Commander in Chief of the Combined Japanese Fleet during World War 11.
Yamamoto “famously” said, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941 :
” I fear all we have done is awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”
Bit in that, to consider as History Never Lies – and place it in the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.
    DEMOCRACY – will not CAPITULATE.
It WILL strengthen in it’s RESOLVE to DEFEAT the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.
