Orbán signed the stationing of NATO troops in Hungary

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has recently signed a decree authorising that NATO can station troops in Hungary.

A decree was issued on Monday in response to the Russian-Ukrainian war. The new decree prohibits the transport of life-threatening weapons to Ukraine via Hungary. Hungary has chosen a different path than other Eastern European NATO members.

Hungary protects the borders with its own military resources and did not ask NATO troops for the Ukrainian border.

The government decree on “Team movements and other military duties related to the crisis in Ukraine” has been published in the Hungarian Gazette. Naturally, the Charter of the United Nations, NATO and EU memberships come with responsibilities. “In order to facilitate the troop movements and other duties of the armed forces of the allied states in connection with the crisis in Ukraine,” the Hungarian Government also had to step in.

Hungary is taking steps

Portfolio.hu summarizes the activities of the Hungarian Government as follows:

1. Hungary allows NATO forces to pass through and settle in Hungary. This applies to both ground and air forces.
2. Following the EU decision made on 28th February, the country authorises the transfer of military equipment intended for the deployment of lethal force to other Allied Member States  Transportation can occur by air or land.
3. However, Hungary does not allow the transport of such equipment and platforms to Ukraine.
4. The Hungarian Government permits the transport of equipment and supplies intended for the delivery of non-lethal force to Ukraine or any other Allied Member State. These include personal protective equipment, first aid equipment and fuel.
5. Hungary also agrees to the transport of health and other humanitarian materials not covered by point 4. Shipped to either an allied state or Ukraine.

The Hungarian government has asked the Minister of Defence to inform the National Security Operations Tribunal about requests for technical permits from the Allied Armed Forces. Hungary hopes that these measures will help stop the war and retain peace.
