Poland scrambled its air force early Sunday after Russia carried out large-scale airstrikes on western Ukraine, including areas near the Polish border, according to the country’s operational command.

“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness,” the operational command said on the US social media platform X, the Turkish Anadolu News Agency wrote.

Ukrainian officials said missiles and drones targeted the Lviv region, located close to Poland, as Russia launched a new wave of attacks overnight.

Eastern-flank NATO members, including Poland, remain on high alert amid an increase in suspected airspace violations. In September, Poland said it shot down Russian drones that entered its territory, while recent drone sightings in Copenhagen and Munich have caused temporary disruptions to European aviation. Russia has denied involvement.

In a related development, Lithuania’s main airport in Vilnius was closed for several hours overnight after reports of a possible series of balloons approaching the area late Saturday.

Ukraine says 5 killed, 16 injured in Russian airstrikes on Lviv, Zaporizhzhia regions

Ukraine said on Sunday that at least five people were killed and 16 others injured in an overnight Russian airstrike on the western Lviv and southeastern Zaporizhzhia regions.

“In (the village of) Lapaivka, the enemy hit a residential building — the death toll has increased to four people,” Lviv Governor Maksym Kozytskyy said in a statement on Telegram, noting that six others were injured in the region.

Kozytskyy said that one house was destroyed as a result of the overnight attack, and eight more were damaged.

The country’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) said the overnight attack in the western Ukrainian region lasted for over five hours, and that all emergency services are working continuously at the sites of the strikes.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi separately wrote that a number of fires have erupted in the region’s administrative center, including an industrial park.

Separately, Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov declared that one person was killed and 10 others were injured in his region, where he reported power outages and damage to local infrastructure, including eight apartment buildings.

The country’s Energy Ministry said Ukrainian energy facilities were also targeted in the attack, including in the Zaporizhzhia region. “The situation in Sumy and Chernihiv regions remains difficult,” it added.

50+ missiles, 500+ attack drones

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed more than 50 missiles and about 500 attack drones were launched during the overnight attack, which he said also targeted the Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa, and Kirovohrad regions.

“We need more protection and faster implementation of all defense agreements, especially on air defense, to deprive this aerial terror of any meaning. A unilateral ceasefire in the skies is possible – and it is precisely that which could open the way to real diplomacy. America and Europe must act to make (Russian President Vladimir) Putin stop,” Zelenskyy added.

Ukraine’s Air Force later claimed that air defenses shot down 493 out of 496 drones, as well as 39 out of 53 various types of missiles, launched by Russia overnight.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a later statement that it launched a mass strike on Ukrainian military-industrial complex facilities, as well as energy infrastructure supporting their operation. “The strike’s objectives were achieved. All designated targets were hit,” it said.

  1. Another attempt of the Western political leadership, that wants to kill you (yes you, dear reader), like they sacrificed Ukrainians, so that they can finally balkanize Russia.

Do you want to die, so some diabolical villain can rule Earth unopposed?

If so, support the warmongerers, and die in a trench, being torn in two by an artillary shell.

    • Anyone with a brain knows who the obvious “warmongers” are in the Ukrainian conflict. The Russian aggressors thought they could take Ukraine in days. They have been there three and a half years mired in a war that is sapping the economic strength of their country and killing their own people as they die by the thousands in Ukraine. Inflation is rampant in Russia. Debt is rising. Gasoline is now rationed in many areas and a food crisis is beginning to develop. Russia’s harvest is the worst in 17 years. The Russian invaders served to unite Europe bringing Sweden and Finland into NATO which was a huge strategic error for Putin.

  2. Another heinous attack by the Satanic Russian mafia government. They occupied Eastern Europe including Hungary for 46 long years. They hate your freedom and they want to take it away and make you live under Russian enslavement again. As Orban said in 2007 “Freedom always comes from the West”. As long as we continue to oppose and resist the Russian invaders we will keep our freedom. Slava Ukraini!
