Police find new weapons cache allegedly connected with extremist group
Budapest, November 29 (MTI) – Police have discovered a new cache of weapons and ammunition suspected of being connected with the extremist Magyar Nemzeti Arcvonal, or Hungarian National Front, paramilitary organisation.
During a house search in Jászbereny, around 80km east of Budapest, by the national bureau of investigation, materials suspected of being poison and explosives were also uncovered.
Police arrested a male suspect from the town and his pre-trial detention is being sought. The suspect is thought to have a connection with the extremist organisation, police said in a statement.
Last week, five people were held in custody after authorities seized weapons in a coordinated raid carried out in several Hungarian localities. All suspects were linked to the paramilitary National Front, whose leader was arrested in October after fatally shooting a police officer in Bony.
The counter-terrorism force (TEK) carried out house searches in Budapest, Ipolytölgyes, Jászárokszállás, Pécs and Putnok. Investigators seized weapons, data storage devices, notes and propaganda materials, as well as drugs at one of the sites, a statement published on the national police’s website said.
Police questioned four of the men suspected of preparing a violent attack against members of a community, while one person was questioned for possessing illegal weapons.
Earlier in November, 12 people were remanded in custody at various sites in Budapest and elsewhere after handguns and explosives were found at their homes. Those suspects were also allegedly connected to the National Front.
