The parliamentary committee investigating alleged abuses related to the operations of the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) will hold its first meeting at 1 PM on Wednesday, the TISZA parliamentary group told MTI on Sunday evening.

Attila Csőszi, chairman of the investigative committee, said in a video posted on Facebook that hundreds of billions of forints in public money had been transferred to foundations established by the Hungarian National Bank. He said the investigation would, among other things, seek to establish what happened to those funds.

According to the politician, the committee will examine “who was responsible and where the public money disappeared”, who benefited the most from it and what it was spent on. The committee began its work at the initiative of the TISZA parliamentary group.

As an example, Csőszi cited the case of Kecskemét, where the Neumann János University and Tudásváros received HUF 144 billion. However, he claimed that a significant portion of the money – HUF 127.5 billion – was “gambled away on the stock market”.

He also referred to a property in Balatonakarattya, saying that HUF 20 billion had been spent on its renovation before it was subsequently put up for sale for HUF 9 billion. Regarding the MNB’s headquarters, Csőszi raised the issue of its construction costs, saying the original budget of HUF 55 billion eventually rose to HUF 105 billion.

The chairman of the investigative committee said its aim was to establish who was responsible for what happened. He added that the ultimate goal was to ensure that similar cases could not occur in the future.
