Renovation of Hungarian Parliament interior uncertain, millions already spent on plans
The renovation of the interior of Hungary’s Parliament has been postponed due to budgetary constraints, according to a statement on Thursday.
The government has suspended all investment projects which are not already under way, including the modernisation of Parliament’s interior, owing to the economic climate “linked to sanctions against Russia”, the ministry of construction and investment said in a statement.
Wednesday’s official gazette notes the government decision to launch an assessment of the proposed multi-year refurbishment, the statement said. The project itself will be undertaken when it becomes financially viable to do so, it added.
The 120-year-old building’s energy and security systems must be upgraded as part of the investment, and the plan for the refurbishment must be ready by mid-2023, the ministry said.
The government has allocated HUF 457.4 million (EUR 1.13 million) from the 2023 budget for the project, 444.hu reports.
