A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the international football community: Diogo Jota, the Liverpool FC and Portuguese national team forward, has died alongside his brother, André Felipe, who played in Portugal’s second division for Penafiel. The 28-year-old footballer and his two-year-younger brother were involved in a serious car accident late Wednesday night near the Spain-Portugal border, in Zamora province.
Devastating accident
The siblings were driving their Lamborghini sports car when a tire blew out during an overtaking manoeuvre, causing them to lose control and crash into a guardrail, Telex reported. The car caught fire and was completely destroyed in the accident, killing both brothers on the spot.

Liverpool supporters gathered outside the club’s stadium to mourn, lighting candles and laying flags in memory of the players, the BBC reports. The football world and fans alike expressed their condolences across social media.
