Hungarian Nobel Prize winner Ferenc Krausz receives Semmelweis University award

Nobel laureate physicist Ferenc Krausz has received this year’s Semmelweis Budapest Award. On receiving the honour, Krausz said he saw the award as “the drive and motivation to reinforce our faith in customised, preventive medicine in the future through joint efforts between my team and Semmelweis University“. He said his infrared molecular fingerprinting procedure was promising, but practical implementation required a lot of further work.

The award was handed over by Béla Merkely, the dean of Semmelweis University, in a ceremony on Thursday. He noted in his laudation that the Center for Molecular Fingerprinting, headed by Krausz, is working in cooperation with the university’s Neumann Janos Data Science Institute. Their research is aimed at establishing a procedure to diagnose diseases early through a single blood sample, offering optimum treatment tailored to the patient’s needs.

Semmelweis University established its international award honouring scientists with globally recognised achievements in 2009.
