2 senior doctors in Budapest swindled hundreds of millions of forints from unsuspecting patients – photos, videos

Two senior doctors may have cheated hundreds of millions of forints from unsuspecting patients by claiming that although their treatment in the hospital was state-funded, patients still had to pay a foundation fee—and an outrageously high one at that. The question remains: how on earth did the patients manage to pay such sums?

Doctors extorted hundreds of millions

The ringleaders of this criminal operation were the two senior doctors, but while they were absent, a social worker employed at a capital city hospital’s internal medicine department also assisted them, according to police.hu. What is truly shocking is that police seized several hundred million forints from their secret cash reserve last week after their arrest.

According to an official statement, the National Protective Service filed charges on 6 October 2023, suspecting that at a state-funded internal medicine ward in Budapest, the two senior doctors unlawfully demanded monthly payments of HUF 100,000 to 140,000 (EUR 250 to 357) as “foundation support” for patients’ state-funded accommodation and care.

To give their scheme the appearance of legitimacy, they operated an illegal cash register. The foundation fees were collected either directly by the doctors or, in their absence, by a hospital-employed social worker.

Following two years of data gathering, the Budapest Police Headquarters arrested all three individuals on 1 October 2025, confiscating hundreds of millions of forints, documents, and electronic devices from the doctors.

Years behind bars loom

One senior doctor faces suspicion for accepting bribes on 40 occasions, the other on 51, while the social worker is suspected in 4 such cases.

Both doctors were taken into custody, and their pre-trial detention was ordered by the court, the statement confirmed.

In Hungary, fraud causing exceptionally large damage—between HUF 50,000,001 and 500,000,000—carries a prison sentence of 2 to 8 years. The severity is worsened by the organised nature of the crime and the vulnerability of the victims, who were exploited due to their illness and often their age.

  1. Guesse that they forgot the hypocratic oath to Do No Harm. If the victims were seniors there should be higher punishment level because every society has responsibility to protect vulnerable persons. And senior abuse is a very serious mark on society which does not respond appropriately.
