Budapest, July 28 (MTI) – The opposition Socialists have called on development minister Miklos Sesztak to resign, repeating complaints that the minister had assisted in shady deals as an attorney in the past.
Bernadett Budai, a spokesperson for the party, said that according to a report published in Monday’s daily Nepszabadsag, Sesztak had given his legal signature to company documents in which he was a signatory himself. Rules of the chamber of law state that this behaviour is inappropriate, Budai said, citing the paper.

Budai added that Sesztak had been implicated earlier in shady deals, alleging that as a member of an offshore company group’s supervisory board he had assisted in tapping on 12.5 billion forints (EUR 40.51m) worth of EU subsidies.
Sesztak is unworthy of filling the post of minister, Budai said, adding that he had also allegedly participated in registering and terminating hundreds of phantom companies.
News portal Index.hu earlier reported Sesztak’s involvement in registering 700 companies with the same address in northeastern Hungary, set up following the same pattern, and due to failure to pay tax, illegitimate and obscure activities, the companies were later terminated by the registry court.
Sesztak had dismissed index.hu’s allegations as “malignant” and insisted he had obeyed the law at all times.
