Student job in Hungary: 2 euros per hour

Budapest, September 2 (MTI) – Currently 40 percent of students do jobs as well as study as against around 10 percent in previous years, the daily Népszabadság said on Friday.

Hourly wages paid to students have also started to increase, the paper said, quoting the head of the largest student association DeakÉSZ, Balázs Simon.

The absolute number of students with jobs has not risen, since the total number of students has dropped, and universities and colleges have introduced stricter attendance rules.

Board member of student association Meló-Diák, Zoltán Kott, told the paper that around 30 percent more students take summer jobs, while there is less demand for work in the rest of the year.

The student associations estimate that 130,000 students work each year and demand for them is increasing. Their hourly wages started growing around a year ago, the paper said. Whereas in the past even the best-paid student jobs equalled the minimum wage, the average student wage is now 630-640 forints (EUR 2) and as high as 740-750 forints in Budapest, the paper said.
