Syrian in 2015 Röszke unrest charged with terrorism
Budapest, February 18 (MTI) – Southern Hungary’s chief prosecutor has pressed charges of terrorism against a Syrian national who was involved in a violent clash between migrants and the Hungarian authorities at the Röszke border station in September last year.
The defendant, who is in pre-trial detention, is suspected of having committed a terrorist act through participation in the riots, illegal entry into Hungary, and violence against official persons, said a spokesman from the prosecutor’s office.
On September 16, one day after Hungary sealed its border and tightened migration laws, a group of angry migrants on the Serbia side of the border fence clashed with police in an attempt to force their entry into Hungary. The crowd pelted stones and sticks at the police, while the authorities responded with water cannons and tear gas.
