Could former FM Szijjártó become Deputy Speaker of the new Hungarian Parliament? Péter Magyar reacts harshly

The Tisza Party will not vote for Péter Szijjártó, who “has betrayed Hungarian interests,” as Deputy Speaker of Parliament, prime minister-elect Péter Magyar said on his Facebook page on Tuesday morning.

The incoming prime minister added that they were waiting for Fidesz to propose a new candidate.

Holy Crown Board refuses to approve moving crown to parliamentary ceremony

Hungary’s Holy Crown Board rejected a proposal to move the Holy Crown from its current place in Parliament into the plenary chamber for the official swearing-in ceremony of deputies, the Sándor Palace said late on Monday.

The body had to decide whether to approve a proposal, made during the political consultations preparing the inaugural session of parliament, to place and guard the Holy Crown temporarily in the plenary chamber of Parliament on the day of the 2026 inaugural session.

President Tamas Sulyok, as the President of the Holy Crown Board, presented the proposal with his support. The body discussed the matter, but the necessary majority for a substantive decision was not achieved, and therefore no resolution was adopted.

This does not exclude the possibility that, if required, the oath-taking before parliament could still take place in the presence of the Holy Crown at its original location in the Dome Hall of Parliament, in a dignified manner and in accordance with the relevant legal provisions and historical traditions, President Sulyok was quoted as saying in the statement.

The Holy Crown Board consists of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of Parliament, the President of the Constitutional Court, the President of the Curia, Hungary’s Supreme Court, the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the President of the Hungarian Academy of Arts.
