7 million bottles of Hungarian wine spread through Europe by a multinational business

As it was revealed at Lidl Wine Expo Hungary, a German supermarket chain significantly contributed to the further popularisation of the world-famous Hungarian wine culture: it sold almost 15 million bottles of Hungarian wine last year. About half of this amount was exported beyond Hungary’s borders. Királyleányka, Tokaji Furmint and Szürkebarát have proven to be the most popular among the market chain’s customers, according to Forbes.hu.

Lidl Wine Expo Hungary was hosted for the fifth time this year. 366 brands and types of Hungarian wines were represented at the event that is keen on spreading the fame of Hungarian wineries in Europe. The representatives of 10 European countries — including Germany, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and Poland — tasted hundreds of wines from 21 different wine areas to choose the ones they mean to merchandise.

The event is important especially for smaller wine cellars and family enterprises, for which it means a great opportunity to get famous.

Lidl Wine Expo Hungary seems to be effective in its purpose, as its visitors ordered 3.1 million bottles of wine following the tasting. Such prestigious wine experts participate at the wine expo as Caroline Gilby and Richard Bampfield.

The ominous German supermarket chain sold 14.9 million bottles of different Hungarian wine brands during 2017. This is almost 20 percent better than in the year before.

Fortunately, not only customers from abroad are interested in Hungarian wine: 7.8 million bottles were sold in Hungary last year, which is also about one fifth more than the 6.3 million in 2016. The other 7 million bottles were exported to several other countries of Europe, estimated to be worth 9.7 million euros. Thus Lidl provides 10 percent of the whole Hungarian wine market. Hungarian wineries produce a rapidly increasing tendency both inside and outside the country’s borders.

According to the sales, the three most popular brands were Királyleányka, Tokaji Furmint and Szürkebarát in 2017.

HTCC Africa Expo

During seven years, 136 exhibitors and 26 different African countries have represented themselves at the Africa Expo in Budapest. Quarter million visitors were interested in the event that took place in the Travel Exhibition this year as well. Globoport.hu wrote about the occasion.

HTCC Africa Expo

Sándor Balogh, the chairperson of the African Hungarian Union, opened the event with a thought:

“People are not African because they were born there, they are African because Africa was born in them.”

According to him, the Africa Expos aim to charm the visitors with Africa’s beauty and show them what a diverse continent it is. Leading decision makers of the world have realised that Africa is home to such natural treasures that are important for the other continents as well.

Culture and business

Africa has a growing interest in our country and many African people want to get to know our culture or even study in Hungary. Curiosity works in the other way as well since HTCC (Hungarian Trade and Cultural Center) help Hungarian people meet the African culture and build successful businesses there.

Botswana, South-Africa, Gambia, Ghana, Malawi, Morocco and Uganda already have Hungarian houses in the continent that is not only diverse but can also be the economic centre of the next quarter or half century.” – said Sándor Balogh.

He also quoted a Mandinka saying:

“A lot of small people in a lot of small places doing a lot of small things can change the world after all.”

Programmes

The Expo had a rich scale of programmes such as informing the visitors about business opportunities from Malawi to Morocco. Additionally, African born celebrities like Sena Dagadu, Kembe Sorel, and other famous experts and writers. Abdoul Camara, a Senegalese prize-winner dancer, entertained visitors with his bafalon play and acrobatic dance.

Children could admire the African four-toed hedgehog and the curious chameleon changing its colours thank for the Kaméleon Sziget (Chameleon Island). Moreover, Taita Foundation entertained the smallest ones with crafts and pearl beading besides African board games and mask making in the kids’ corner.

There were two special exhibitions at the expo as well. Little kids from Malawi could photograph their everyday life after a crash-course. The Földkelte Alapítvány (Earthrise Foundation) showed the best photos at the Ismerd meg a Világot (Get to Know the World) exhibition. One could also look at the Masks of Africa: the valuable and most beautiful pieces of a private collection called Burkina Fasótól Kongóig (From Burkina Faso to Congo), that were never presented before.

Milan World Expo organisers want Hungarian pavilion to stay

Budapest, January 11 (MTI) – The organisers of the Milan World Expo have asked Hungary not to remove its pavilion from the Expo area so that it could become part of a planned Italian Institute of Technology complex.

The organisers sent an official request to Hungary on January 8 asking for the “The Garden of Life” pavilion to remain in place, government commissioner Geza Szocs said.

The commissioner called the Italian request a major success and recognition for Hungary as well as for the designers and the builders. Only five countries have been asked to leave their pavilion on the World Expo area, he said.

Hungary was asked to provide the building for the Italian side free of charge, he said, adding that this solution would save the costs of disassembly and cleanup for the Hungarian state. The government will make a decision on the matter on the basis of Szocs’s proposal.

The Milan World Expo ended on October 31, 2015.

Milan expo pavilion to be re-erected in Karcag, serve as museum

Budapest, December 17 (MTI) – Hungary’s pavilion for the Milan World Expo is being dismantled and will be transferred to Karcag, in central-eastern Hungary, where it will serve as a museum from 2017 showcasing the country’s equestrian traditions.

Geza Szocs, the government commissioner for the expo, told a news conference that a lawsuit against Hungary had been dropped by the Italian authorities.

An Italian company involved in building the pavilion had lodged a request for the property’s seizure after a dispute over payment, but a local court rejected the suit.

Milan Expo Hungarian pavilion to be moved to Karcag

Budapest, December 3 (MTI) – The government is planning to have Hungary’s pavilion moved from the Milan Expo to Karcag, in eastern Hungary, Janos Lazar, head of the government office, said at a regular government press conference on Thursday.

The government has selected Karcag out of five applicant cities to host the pavilion, Lazar said. He added that “Italy has taken the pavilion hostage” but the government would make efforts to recover it.

On another subject, Lazar said that the government had approved plans for a new soccer stadium to be built in the city of Szeged, southern Hungary.

At a session on Wednesday, the government also agreed to contribute financing towards the democracy centre at the Tom Lantos Institute, Lazar said.

Answering questions about plans to move government headquarters to the Castle District, Lazar said that it was a long-term plan spanning the next 20 years. The plans focus on moving the prime minister’s office to the presidential Sandor Palace, while the chancellery would occupy the former Carmelite monastery next to it, and the offices of the President would be moved to the Royal Palace.

Lazar also announced that some 200 billion forints (EUR 639m) in direct EU subsidies will have been paid out to Hungarian farmers by the end of the year.

Concerning the sales of state-owned plots of farmland, now under way, Lazar said that prospective buyers have applied for a total 193 billion forints (EUR 617m) of loans to help them with the purchases, and added that the Hungarian Development Bank, providing the loans, will need additional coverage from the central bank. So far, some 50,000 hectares have been auctioned at a total price of 70 billion forints (EUR 224m). He added that the auctions would probably continue in January.

The government will start new negotiations with the European Commission concerning Hungary’s utility cuts programme with the aim of protecting the scheme, Lazar said. He noted that the Commission had launched infringement procedures against ten member states over similar programmes, and said that Hungary would seek allies among those countries.

Concerning a recent amendment to Hungary’s public procurement law, Lazar insisted that the changes mean that now the legislation is “Europe’s strictest” because it stipulates that family members of senior state officials living in the same household are barred from bidding for public projects. Lazar rejected allegations that the changes should have been tailored to benefit certain persons. “The government has adopted the principle that distant relatives should not be excluded from public purchases,” he said.

Answering a question, Lazar said that he had raised the salaries of state companies within his authority. He argued that “good experts are difficult to engage unless competitive salaries are offered”. He noted that senior officials in the banking sector made a monthly 5 million forints (EUR 16,000), while heads of smaller companies earned 2-3 million forints.

This is what the HTCC Africa Expo will be like

Next year’s 5th HTCC Africa Expo – just like the previous ones – will be held as part of the Utazas (Traveling) exhibition on March 3-6th, globoport.hu wrote.

Ildiko Hermina Szilasi, founder and chief organizer of Africa Expo held a press conference in the 25 pavilion of Hungexpo Fair Center of Budapest. At the event, in addition to the representatives of the press, associates of several African countries’ embassies and tourist offices participated.

Three short lectures were given. Janos Rafay, director of Utazas Exhibition pointed out that the exhibition has two purposes: one is the entertainment and the information of the potential travelers as well as informing the partners and facilitating their business meetings.

Because of the 2016 Rio Olympics, various sport disciplines will be presented and a real carnival atmosphere will be created. Of course, the event’s cultural guest of honor will be Brazil, and the professional guest of honor will be China.

The second lecture was held by the director of HTCC (Hungarian Trade and Cultural Center – the title sponsor of the 2016 Africa Expo) Szabolcs Kutasi and his colleague Akos Szatmari. 8 HTCC-s have been working with great success in Africa and Asia. They help the travel of several Hungarian businessmen and there are more and more established businesses.

Ildiko Szilasi – who is more and more tightly bound to Senegal where she has been appointed to Hungary’s Honorary Counsellor of Foreign Economy – reported in her presentation that Uganda will probably be the guest of honor of next year’s Expo, and a high-ranking delegation is also expected. They also await guests from other African countries and from the Vienna embassies of the countries (since several African countries do not have diplomatic missions in Hungary – editor). The biggest event is the opening which is usually attended by 300-400 people and most of the African ambassadors accredited in Budapest are also present. On the first, the conference will be held which expects 100-120 guests. The organizer of the Africa Expo will be the Culture Africa Foundation again, globoport.hu wrote.

HTCC Business Lounge will be a novelty where businessmen can negotiate under pleasant, quiet conditions. More exhibitors and visitors are expected than as before. Programs will be exciting and more spectacular. The main media partners are Globoport, Port.hu and Index.

After the press conference, the participants of the event went to the Hungexpo Fair Center A pavilion of Budapest where they visited the location of next year’s exhibition.

Government: Hungary exposed to premeditated attack

Budapest, September 17 (MTI) – Hungarian police have been subjected to a premeditated attack at Roszke on the Serbian border, the government spokesman said on Thursday.

What happened on Wednesday was “a brutal attack, for which there is no excuse,” Zoltan Kovacs said.

The spokesman said it was a lie that the conflict developed out of misunderstanding and denied reports that some migrants had been allowed to enter Hungary before the clashes started.

“Police gave a proportionate response to the attacks launched by armed migrants,” he insisted.

The police have identified a man, believed to be a leader of the riot, who is a Syrian national. Circumstances are now being investigated to establish whether a charge of terrorist act can be raised against him, the spokesman said.

Hungary is committed to protecting the country’s and the EU’s borders, Kovacs said, adding that the EU’s external Schengen borders should be primarily protected in Greece. Hungary is ready to contribute human and financial resources for that purpose, he added.

Hungary has spent more than 200 million euros on strengthening border protection so far this year, whereas received only 7 million for the EU for that project, Kovacs said.

Hungarian pavilion at Milan Expo draws over 1.4 m visitors in first four months

Budapest, September 10 (MTI) – The Hungarian pavilion at the Milan World Expo attracted over 1.4 million visitors in its first four months, drawing over one tenth of the expo’s visitors, the Hungarian pavilion’s spokeswoman told MTI.

Since its opening in May, the expo was visited by no less than 12.2 million, Flora Retfalvi said, adding that attendance figures show that the Milan Expo is on track to hit its target of 20 million visitors. Retfalvi said the Hungarian pavilion’s visitor count of more than 1.4 million made it one of the most popular pavilions at the expo. She said Hungary drew its highest number of visitors in August with 406,000 people checking out the pavilion.

Last weekend, Hungary set new attendance records for Saturday and Sunday, drawing 26,117 and 22,943 visitors respectively, Retfalvi said.

Festive week brings record visitor numbers for Hungarian pavilion in Milan

Budapest (MTI) – The festive week held in the second half of August brought record visitor numbers for the Hungarian pavilion at the Expo Milano 2015, Flora Retfalvi, the pavilion’s communications officer said.

More than 20,000 people visited the day of talent held on August 18, when the famous Polgar sisters played a simultaneous chess game with visitors, and in the afternoon young Hungarian musicians gave a joint classical music concert with Italian counterparts.

Thousands attended the series of events held on the occasion of the August 20 national holiday, which began with a promenade and harvest parade, followed by the ceremonial blessing of the new bread made with a special ancient variety of wheat.

The programme gave an insight into the collection of the Kiskunhalas Lace House and Museum as well as Hungarian folk arts and crafts. The evening ended with concerts by award-winning musicians of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and Kossuth-prize winner pianist Gergely Boganyi.

Hungarian pavilion at Milan Expo attracts nearly a million visitors

Budapest, August 11 (MTI) – The Hungarian pavilion at the Milan World Expo attracted nearly a million visitors in its first three months, the government commissioner in charge of the pavilion said on Tuesday.

“By half time”, the expo was visited by more than 10 million people and one-tenth of them also saw the Hungarian pavilion, Geza Szocs told a press conference.

Among the Hungarian “feats” presented at the expo, he highlighted the “miracle piano” developed by Gergely Boganyi, the uniforms worn by Hungarian hostesses that fetched a top prize for their designer Dora Abodi, and Hungarian mineral water, beer, paprika, honey and trotters.

During the six months of the expo, Hungary is to present more than 10 exhibitions, 150 dancers, 70 musicians, 45 Hungaricums and 10 conferences. The concerts, exhibitions and performances are held not only in Milan but also in nearby towns including Cremona, Monza and Varese, he said.

On August 18, all three of the Olympic chess champion Polgar sisters will play at a simultaneous exhibition, where the head of the Italian chess federation also plans to participate, he added.

Skeleton-barrel With A Shaman Drum Will Be The Hungarian Pavilion At The Expo in Milan

The Hungarian pavilion of the Milanese universal expo will be 1910 square meters and will have about 3000 square meters usable area.

According to hvg.hu, the two shaman drums at the two ends of the building refer to the ancient roots, the mythic relation of human and nature while the middle could represent a barrel symbolizing abundance or simply the ark of Noah, with the roof garden standing for the kaleidoscope of wildlife- says the introduction of the plan.

The overreaching ribs or staves of the roof garden can even be parts of a gigantic skeleton, but they also represent openness to above, turning to the sunlight or the petals surrounding the “essence”- added the architects.

MTI said, the Hungarian government will spend a total 4.7 billion forints on the pavilion representing the country at the 2015 World Expo in Milan, Geza Szocs, government commissioner in charge of the project.

Hungary pavilion cornerstone placed at Milan World Expo site

Milan, April 3 (MTI) – Government Commissioner Geza Szocs on Thursday laid the cornerstone of the Hungarian pavilion at the site of the 2015 World Expo in Milan.

The Hungarian pavilion will cover 1,910sqm, the commissioner’s office told MTI.

Hungary, next to Italy, will be the only country to rebuild its pavilion once the Milan expo has come to an end. It plans to set up an R+D and education centre in the rebuilt pavilion in Szombathely, in the west of the country. Fully 2.5 billion forints (EUR 8.1m) will be spent on building, dismantling and transferring the pavilion.

The 2015 expo addressing sustainable development under the slogan “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” will be held between May 1 and Oct. 31. Hungary will present the three main topics: water, protection against GMOs and environmentally focused youth education.

In this spirit, Szocs planted a Pomme Batul apple tree at the Milan site. The tree was chosen as Hungary’s symbol since this variety goes back to the country’s foundation over a thousand years ago.
