Hungarian first responders had a busy Christmas

First Responders Hungarian Firefighters

Although the relatively cold weather and sleet did not cause as many problems as it could have, the Hungarian National Directorate for Disaster Management received over 167 emergency calls in total, including fires and traffic accidents.

According to Telex, from these 167 emergency calls, first responders had to intervene in more than 134 cases.

Despite people’s expectations of the weather causing problems, the firefighters were called to 45 cases of fire emergency, and overall, 36 houses caught fire during Christmas.

The firefighters also had to assist in several other cases, in a total of 89, providing technical rescue for victims.

According to Origo, there were several cases of fire that are considered typical winter cases. In Márianosztra and in Besnyő, the basement caught fire because the residents stored their firewood there.

Another typical case of fire was when an Advent wreath caught fire in an apartment building. However, there were more serious cases as well.

Telex reports that a car dismantling workshop caught fire in Hajdúböszörmény where gas canisters posed a great threat. The firefighters brought several of them out of the building, but one had to be shot by a sniper. 29 firefighters with 10 vehicles were ordered to extinguish this fire.

Origo wrote about another serious case where a waste disposer full of paper caught fire near a shopping centre, and the flames spread to the warehouse of the building. 28 people were evacuated.

Even during Christmas, over 2,000 firefighters and 500 vehicles are on duty in Hungary to be able to help the people.

Romanian citizen set two restaurants on fire in Budapest – VIDEO

fire

A man tried to set two restaurants on fire at the Déli Railway Station in Budapest.

A couple of months ago, DNH reported how the Hungarian capital was getting safer with the number of crimes decreasing. Still, on some occasions, there are some pretty crazy or hard-to-understand offences.

Shocking crime – Robbers wanted to steel vaccines in Budapest?

This crime is one such case. In March,

a man started a fire at not one but two restaurants right next to Déli Railway Station.

He caused considerable damage of two and a half million forints (over seven thousand euros), writes hvg.hu.

Luckily, the fires were put out in time, before they could cause even more significant damage, either in the neighbouring buildings or the railway station.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Budapest writes that the Romanian citizen started the fires on purpose. On March 1, the 33-year-old man walked to a restaurant and set the huge sheet used to cover the furniture on fire. The fire then spread onto the plastic chairs, the fridges, the sidewall of the restaurant, and the outer storage areas. A waiter noticed what was happening and immediately called the firefighters. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived and resolved the situation, the damage already reached two million forints (about 5,700 euros).

A little later, he walked to another restaurant about a hundred metres away. He tucked newspaper pieces in between the holes of the foil tent on the façade of the building, then set the paper on fire with his lighter.

Overall, he caused significant damage of over 7,000 euros.

Moreover, there was a real risk that the flames would spread in the area, onto inflammable liquids, neighbouring resident buildings, and onto the railway station.

The perpetrator is currently under arrest and waiting for his court hearing where the Prosecutor will charge him with causing public danger and ask for jail time.

Tragedy in Budapest: a family of 4 died together

facebook

The parents and their two children were found together in their Budapest home.

A little over three months ago, Daily News Hungary reported the tragic accident of a Hungarian family in Florida. In that case, the two children were lucky to survive.

This accident, on the other hand, had a much worse ending. A family of 4 were found dead in their own home on Monday in the late hours in the VIth district of the Hungarian capital.

The two parents and their children were victims of a carbon-dioxide poisoning.

Blikk reported it first, based on their sources, that the family have been probably dead for days, even though they were found only on Monday.

Dr Qidan Munther was a much loved and appreciated family doctor/physician

who was commuting between Budapest and the big settlement of Tarpa in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, where he worked in his profession.

A waitress, working in the restaurant right next to the apartment, told origo.hu that his colleagues started to look for him after he had not shown up to work for several days. As there was no reaction or answer on his part, the police started a search. That is how he was found, together with his whole family, in their home in the capital. The firefighters had to break the windows to get inside.

Neither the employees of the restaurant nor the neighbours did smell absolutely anything of the lethal gas.

The waitress also added that all windows of their home were closed because the air-conditioning was on.

The family had no chance to survive the leaking as the gas could not exit the apartment. They were all suffocated.

One of the boys has just finished kindergarten and was about to start school next autumn. One of their neighbours was his kindergarten teacher.

“The little boy went to my class, I knew him well…I kissed his cheek just a week and a half ago. That was when I last saw him”, she said.

“They were a beautiful family. The older boy was already in school, and as my wife has said, the younger one would have started primary school. Their mother was beautiful, too”, added the teacher’s husband.

The news completely shocked everyone who knew them; even an official announcement was posted on Facebook by the settlement of Tarpa, expressing their condolences to their relatives and referring to him and the whole of his family as the settlement’s own deceased.

The spokesperson of the firefighters said that the provider was called immediately to cut the flow of the gas, to find out which appliance could have caused the tragedy. However, the malfunctioning machine was not specified.

May they rest in peace.

Hungarian Police was shocked what they have found in a 25-year-old’s apartment

The Hungarian police have found a quite disturbing discovery last week in the apartment of a man who turned out was also wanted for arson when he ignited several piles of unwanted communal waste a few months back.

According to Police.hu, civilians have reported a suspicious car and a strange smell coming from said vehicle. When the police went ahead and investigated the call, they have found the rotting carcass of a dog inside the car.

The owner of the car is a 25-year-old man, Zsolt S. Based on suspicion the police have sent officers to the man’s apartment in Kőbánya to search the perpetrators home.

To their surprise, the investigators have found several other dead animals in the owner’s apartment Hvg reported.

Among the carcasses of animals, there were many species that are under protection in Hungary. The police have found several birds like a common buzzard, a song thrush, and even mammals like a red squirrel and even a deer.

Why would a young Hungarian commit an ISIS terrorist attack?

According to the Hungarian police, some of these animals are illegal to possess even if they are already deceased.

Some of them are under protection and others are under the ownership of the Hungarian Hunters’ National Association. They pressed charges against the 25-year-old perpetrator for theft.

According to Hvg, since the man’s detention the investigators have also found out with the help of CCTV recordings, that

the man who have possessed the animal carcasses might have also been the perpetrator of arson a few month back during the waste disposal in Budapest.

In addition to theft, they have also charged Zsolt S. with vandalism and interrogated him. During the interrogation he confessed that he had caused all three fires but he had no explanation for collecting dead animals.

Fire ravages hospital in Philippines treating COVID-19 patients

Fire Firefighter

Firefighters put out a blaze early on Sunday at one of the Philippines’ largest hospitals that had prompted the evacuation of dozens of patients from the facility, which also treats coronavirus sufferers.

No casualties were reported in the fire at the government-run Philippine General Hospital in the capital, Manila, which was extinguished at dawn. Its cause is not known.

On Twitter, Vice President Leni Robredo made an appeal for “big, industrial fans” to clear the smoke caused by the fire.

Hospital authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.

Some patients were transferred to nearby hospitals, including two who needed surgery and 12 babies from the neonatal intensive care unit, CNN Philippines said, citing hospital officials.

Hospital staff said the fire started in an operating room supply area soon after midnight.

The hospital has more than 1,300 beds and treats 600,000 patients a year, it says on its website.

With more than 1.1 million infections and deaths in excess of 19,000, the Philippines ranks second in Southeast Asia in terms of COVID-19 cases.

Apartment Building Fire

This weekend was relatively calm up until an apartment building in Kőbánya, district X of Budapest, went up in flames. The Hungarian Disaster Management sent out several firefighters and specialised rescue units to be able to extinguish the fire.

Origo wrote that the fourth floor of a four-storey apartment building went up in flames and several people were endangered on the roof, immediately above the fire. The incident happened on Saturday night and, according to the report of RTL Híradó, the people were having a party on the roof terrace of the building when the fire started.

According to the owner of the apartment, they were celebrating his daughter’s birthday on the roof with a few friends and family members. The owner said that they smelled smoke. He proceeded to go down to check on the apartment when he found that the bedroom of the apartment was on fire.

The owner told RTL Híradó that the fire got more violent when he opened the door, but he was able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. Unfortunately, he soon proceeded to open the balcony window and the fire got enough oxygen from the draft that it was revived and started to spread again. The owner then fled to the roof and waited for the firefighters to arrive.

A total of 11 people were cornered on the roof and needed saving. The heroic firefighters managed to escort three people out of the building through the staircase using the additional masks which are part of the firefighters’ carried equipment.

Hvg said that as the Disaster Management arrived at the scene with several units as well as two specialised firetrucks – one equipped with a ladder and another with a basket –, they were able to quickly rescue the other eight people on the roof. While some units were focused on saving the people from the roof, other units of firefighters managed to keep the flames under control and eventually extinguish them with two waterjets.

There were a total of 54 people in the apartment building, but thanks to the heroic bravery and rapid response of the firefighter teams, everyone got out in time. The ambulance took twelve people to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

The owner said that the apartment was just renovated a few days ago and now they have lost everything. The report said that the damage is approximate HUF 10,000,000 (€27,777). The fire brigade suspects that the cause of the fire was an electrical short circuit, but they did not confirm that yet.

Violent protests in Berlin – 354 arrests and nearly 100 injured policemen

Germany Protest May Day Coronavirus Pandemic Police

Around 30,000 protesters took to the streets during May Day rallies in Berlin on Saturday, police said, adding nearly 100 officers were injured when some of the demonstrations turned violent.

Police made around 354 arrests during the demonstrations, which they said were for physical assaults and trespassing.

“The violent riots that occurred is something that I very much regret,” Berlin’s head of police Barbara Slowik told local broadcaster rbb24.

Some of the injuries occurred after some demonstrators threw fireworks, bottles and rocks during protests over social inequality. About 5,600 police were deployed, and some responded with pepper spray.

The demonstrations were the second May Day protests since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Turnout was much higher than last year, even though social distancing requirements remain in place.

Protests hit other European capitals too, most notably Paris, where police made 46 arrests as garbage bins were set on fire and the windows of a bank branch were smashed.

In Berlin, police used water cannon to extinguish fires as protesters set ablaze waste bins, barricades and cars.

Demonstrations also took place in several other German cities, including Hamburg and Leipzig, despite Europe’s largest economy grappling with a third wave of the pandemic.

On Sunday, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 16,290 to 3,416,822.

fire in szentendre

The roof of the Spar store in Szentendre caught on fire on Wednesday evening. According to the disaster management report, the fire broke out in the warehouse part of the store found on Dunakanyar Boulevard. Firefighters were called to the scene.

According to an eyewitness account (Index), everything was still calm at 19:10 in the evening, but a quarter of an hour later, the whole building was on fire and the smoke covered everything all the way to the Danube bank.

The flames were extinguished from the outside after 9 pm, after which firefighters focused on the inside of the building.

Nearly 70 professional and volunteer firefighters were involved in the extinguishing.

According to the city’s official Facebook page, there was only one personal injury, and fortunately, it was a minor injury: someone got smoke poisoning; his condition is not severe, but he was taken to hospital. Neither the nearby gas station nor the neighbouring DM building was in danger.

The mobile laboratory for disaster management also arrived at the scene and found that no dangerous substances harmful to the population were released into the air, added the deputy spokesman of the Pest County Disaster Management Directorate.

A fire broke out in a Covid ward of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Hatvan, eastern Hungary, early on Sunday, but caused no injuries, the hospital’s communications director told MTI.

Krisztina Zelnik said a 28-bed, non-intensive care unit ward was evacuated. The building is being aired out and damages repaired, she said, adding that the fire would not cause any protracted disruption of patient care or the operation of the hospital.

Disaster management officials earlier said

the fire broke out in a ward on the first storey of one of the hospital wings, and staff evacuated three wards.

A county disaster management official said seven firetrucks with 22 firefighters from Hatvan and nearby cities had arrived at the scene, extinguishing the flames in a short time. The cause of the fire is being investigated, Csaba Nagy said.

Orbán visited Hungaropharma to see how the vaccines are transported within Hungary

orbán speech

The number of Hungarians vaccinated against the coronavirus will reach 2.5 million “1-2 days after Easter”, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a video message posted on his social media page on Sunday.

The prime minister paid a visit to pharmaceutical company Hungaropharma’s base in Budapest early on Easter Sunday, the PM’s press chief told MTI. Covid vaccines are shipped from the base to inoculation points early every morning, Bertalan Havasi said.

https://www.facebook.com/orbanviktor/posts/10159147538951093

In his video message, Orbán acknowledged the contributions of warehouse workers, pilots and drivers to the vaccination rollout, as well as that of doctors and nurses.

“They do this work every morning. It’s the same today, and we have good chance, if things go as planned tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, to reach the 2.5 million inoculated mark 1-2 days after Easter,” he said.

Hungary’s government will start easing pandemic restrictions gradually after 2.5 million Hungarians have received at least their first jab of Covid vaccine.

The last two Easters were not usual to be sure and this one almost ended up with a catastrophe. Fortunately, no one got injured and thanks to the rapid response of firemen, the fire that broke out in a hospital on the 4th of April was quickly extinguished.

russian hospital burning

Russian doctors stayed behind in a burning, tsarist-era hospital in the country’s Far East on Friday to complete open-heart surgery after a fire broke out on the roof while they were operating.

Firefighters who took more than two hours to put out the blaze in the city of Blagoveshchensk said they used fans to keep smoke out of the operating room and ran in a power cable to keep it supplied with electricity.

A group of eight doctors and nurses completed the operation in two hours before removing the patient to another site, the emergencies ministry said.

“There’s nothing else we could do. We had to save the person. We did everything at the highest level,” surgeon Valentin Filatov was quoted as saying by REN TV. He said it had been a heart by-pass operation.

The ministry said 128 people were immediately evacuated from the hospital as the fire broke out on the roof.

“The clinic was built more than a century ago, in 1907, and the fire spread like lightning through the wooden ceilings of the roof,” the ministry said.

No one was reported hurt.

“A bow to the medics and firefighters,” said Vasiliy Orlov, the local regional governor.

Drunken teenager wanted to escape policemen, ended up stuck in car wreck

Car Accident Autóbaleset Police Firefighters Ambulance Rendőr Mentő Tűzoltó

The 18th district policemen on patrol duty wanted to stop a car in Budapest at Havanna Street on Saturday, March 20th, at half-past eleven in the night, but the events escalated quickly, and even the special equipment of the disaster management unit was needed.

According to Police, their patrolling personnel signalled for the vehicle to stop and pull over, but instead of following the policemen’s instructions, the car just continued, but at a nearby turn, it hit a light pole, and that is when things got more serious.

As it turns out, three boys were travelling in the car, two of them 18 years old and the third only 16. During the investigation, the police found that

one of the 18-year-olds who drove the car not only consumed alcohol and had no driver’s licence but was also prohibited from driving.

According to Origo, the escape attempt did not go smoothly, and one of the passengers was stuck in the car wreck. This was the time when the National Directorate General for Disaster Management was called to help free the young man. The car hit the pole so hard that it broke off and trapped one of the passengers. The disaster management unit was needed for their special hydraulic equipment.

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=494650414865064&t=0

After painstakingly getting them out of the car wreck, they immediately had to be taken to hospital due to their injuries.

And what might hurt them, even more, is that the Police headquarters started a complex investigation into the driver and all the young people travelling in the car. Besides the accident they caused, they also violated the curfew, and the police pressed charges against them.

metro 2 accident

An accident occurred yesterday caused by a woman’s leg stuck between a metro and the platform at the Astoria station on the M2 line. Metro traffic was suspended on the line for a significant time.

Firefighters arrived at the scene, and the rescue was carried out under the direction of the Disaster Response Operations Service. After the power was turned off, the experts pushed the train off the platform using a special inflatable lifting pad to free the woman’s leg, a video of which was shared on YouTube.

According to Index, the injured was then handed over to the ambulance. According to the National Ambulance Service, the woman, who was about 30 years old, suffered a serious limb injury in the accident, she was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The metro didn’t run for hours, and the replacement buses were barely able to cope with the congested crowd in the evening rush hour.

Justice minister: Hungary outperforms EU victim protection requirements

hungarian firemen

Hungary has already outperformed the victim protection goals adopted by the European Union in the first leg of the 2020-2025 period, Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Friday.

Earlier on Friday, Varga briefed the meeting of EU justice ministers on the development of the Hungarian victim protection system.

The minister said on Facebook after the meeting that the EU’s victim support strategy for 2020-2025 included creating effective communication and safe spaces for victims, improving protection for the most vulnerable, facilitating access to compensation and strengthening cooperation among international and domestic players.

Hungary has declared 2020 the year of victim protection, Varga noted.

During that year, Hungary’s government introduced a scheme to reach victims directly, she said. Hungary also scrapped the need-based evaluation of compensating victims of violent crimes, and has raised the timeframe in which compensation claims can be submitted, she said.

Further, the government is working to set up a nationwide network of victim support centres, Varga said. State-run organisations cooperate with NGOs and churches to ensure effective and comprehensive services, she said.

More than half of NYC firefighters will refuse COVID-19 vaccine

new-york_firefighters

First responders on the front lines in New York City will have access to a COVID-19 vaccine in just a few weeks, but a recent survey revealed that more than half of New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters will refuse a COVID-19 vaccine.

The survey polled over 2,000 members and around 55 percent of them said they would not get vaccinated. Many of them said they needed more information before taking the vaccine.

Andrew Ansbro, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, was quoted by news portal Eyewitness News as saying that about 200 members are sick right now, or about two percent of the force. Ansbro is encouraging his members to get the vaccine, though it is not mandatory.

“It’s their choice. We are looking to have this off-duty and not in the firehouse. We don’t want to contaminate our members in the firehouses,” said Ansbro.

Two vaccines are close to being released — one by Pfizer and the other by Moderna. Experts say both appear to be 95 percent effective.

At the end of November, an FDNY internal memo sent to emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics and firefighters said that vaccinations for COVID-19 “will potentially begin in mid-late December” pending U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval.

The memo said that

the vaccine either from Moderna or Pfizer will “NOT” be mandatory “but the Department recommends that members consider the overall health benefits.”

The paramedics and EMTs from the FDNY were particularly hard hit by the virus this spring, with as many as one in four medics sick during the height of the pandemic.

The department also handled a record 6,500-plus 911 calls for nearly a week as hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 exploded citywide.

As of Tuesday morning, the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University reported 35,034 coronavirus deaths in New York State, the worst in the country.

Four killed in large blast in western England

blast in england

Four people were killed Thursday following a large explosion at a waste water treatment works in Avonmouth, near the southwestern city of Bristol in western England, local police confirmed.

The victims include three employees of Wessex Water, and one contractor, according to the police.

The explosion is not being treated as terror-related and is believed to have involved one of the chemical tanks at Wessex Water’s Bristol water recycling centre.

In its latest tweet, Avon and Somerset Police said that “there is not believed to be any ongoing public safety concerns following the incident this morning.”

However, the police urged the public to avoid the area if possible to enable emergency services to carry out their work.

According to Avon and Somerset police chief inspector Mark Runacres, officers remain at the scene and are likely to be for some time as they are dealing with this “major incident”.

“A cordon has been set up and we’d advise members of the public to avoid the area at this time where possible to allow the emergency services to carry out their work,” Runacres said.

“Police enquiries into exactly what happened are at a very early stage and are continuing.”

Following the incident, British Home Secretary Priti Patel said on the Twitter that she was “deeply concerned” at reports of the explosion.

“My thoughts are with those affected and our brave emergency services working hard to resolve this incident,” she said.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said in a tweet: “There has been a large explosion at the Wessex Water site on Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth.”

“My thoughts are with anyone affected by this incident,” Rees added.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on the world since the start of the outbreak. In Budapest, the usual disposing of household waste was also affected by it, and the date of it got shifted. Usually, it would go without much trouble, but due to frustration or some other reason, this year, it almost ended with a disaster.

According to the reports of the Police, during the garbage disposal, objects placed on the street were set on fire in several places in Budapest’s District VII on the night of the 27th of November 2020. The flames endangered nearby houses and parking cars, but luckily, thanks to the fast intervention of the police and fire departments, no one was injured in the fires, and no serious damage was done to any property.

The Budapest Police Headquarters immediately followed up on a lead in the investigation, and within just thirty minutes, the patrolling policemen of the District VIII Police Headquarters caught a man in the underpass of Blaha Lujza Square who tried to light the household waste on fire in that spot as well.

The police caught the 26-year-old Dávid Cs. from Budapest, and he was interrogated as a suspect in a crime causing public danger. Dávid Cs. admitted to the act of lighting the waste on fire in several locations, justifying his actions with his drunkenness. In addition to his detention by the district investigators, a motion was made for his arrest as well.

Tragedy in District 15 of Budapest! Grandparent dies while saving his grandchild – VIDEOS, PHOTOS

In the early hours on Monday, a child’s cry for help could be heard in District 15 of Budapest. A young boy was trying to ask for help from a house that caught on fire. Both of his grandparents lost their lives.

The 12 year-old-boy lived together with his grandparents in the house that caught on fire. The flames went meters high, and the boy’s cry for help could be heard in the neighbourhood: “Help! Someone save me!” – he cried.

According to Blikk, it was the grandfather who found out about the fire when he woke up and went immediately to take his grandchild to the roof to save his life. The child survived, thanks to him. The grandparents, however, were not that lucky; tragically, they both lost their lives. When the police arrived at the site of the accident, they fearlessly saved the young boy from the fire, but his grandparents could not get out. One of them died in the ambulance car, and the other in the hospital later. The house in Pázmány Péter Street, in District 15 of Budapest completely burnt down.

The neighbours were also in shock; they could hardly believe what happened. “We saw the fire, and then within just a couple of minutes, a lot of fire and policemen appeared. We had no idea what could have happened.” – said one of them.

More details were revealed about the circumstances of the tragedy: it turned out that the fire might not have been an accident. Apparently, it could have been caused intentionally by a 51-year-old man, András M., who lived in the same household with the grandparents and the boy.

Originally, there were two houses on the same land – the owners of the land live in the other house. When the grandparents and the boy moved here from Transylvania, the owners let them stay in the second house, which they did not use. The suspect also came from Transylvania and was allowed to stay in the same house. During the fire, he fled the spot and was found later hiding in Újpest by police. Due to the suspicious circumstances, the Budapest Metropolitan Police (BRFK) ordered an investigation. It is yet to be found out, whether causing the fire was intentional or by accident.

Besides, according to Blikk, the grandparents were the legal guardians of the child, therefore what is going to happen with him now is also a question.
