After reaching 5 million vaccinees, another stage of the reopening took effect, many restrictions have been lifted, but basic protection measures are still in place, as the virus is still here.

The use of the mask is still mandatory in all places where protected and unprotected can meet indoors, so it is mandatory to use the mask on public transport and when shopping in stores.

Cultural events, sports events and indoor events, as well as larger outdoor events (attended by more than 500 participants), may be attended by supervised minors and those having immunity certificates. The smaller events (less than 500 participants) held outdoors can be attended by anyone. Exceptions to all this are musical and dance events, which can be attended only by those protected against the coronavirus, regardless of age and location.

A new, single-dose vaccine to be accepted in Hungary!

vaccination-Hungary

Hungarians are more and more reluctant to get vaccinated after reaching the critical milestone of 5 million inoculated people. Since the reopening, the number of vaccines administered has been stagnating.

According to Index, more than 97% of those registered have now been vaccinated in Hungary. The country remains at the forefront of vaccination in Europe. The number of fatalities and infections has been steadily declining, which could boost confidence in vaccines. However, there are still roughly 3 million people not registered for vaccination, and PM Orbán believes they pose a great risk.

In early April, Orbán predicted 6 million vaccines by mid-May and 7 million by the beginning of June. Yet the country only reached 5 million inoculated people on the 22nd of May, and the 7 million target remains out of reach.

“We are Hungarians, we wait,”

says Orbán about the huge drop in vaccination. He claims a lot of Hungarians believe that getting vaccinated will not be necessary once herd immunity is achieved (by others).

There is also a general tendency not to get the second dose. According to 24.hu, there could be several reasons behind this decision: some experienced severe side effects, some became ill before the second dose, and others have received the immunity certificate and thus are no longer motivated to get the second dose.

The six vaccines approved in Hungary continue to come in abundance from the EU procurement deal and the government purchases from the East. According to Index, a new single-dose Chinese vaccine might also be available in Hungary in the near future.

The Hungarian National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition (OGYÉI) is constantly reviewing new vaccines to accept in Hungary.

A Chinese vaccine called Convidecia has been granted a Good Manufacturing Practice (“GMP”) certificate by OGYÉI, meaning it meets the high production standards and guidelines of the EU and could soon be used in Hungary.

Following a thorough inspection of the vaccine’s manufacturing site and process, the certification was issued on May 21.

Similarly to the Sputnik V, Johnson & Johnson, and AstraZeneca vaccines, Convidecia is a viral vector vaccine. Its huge advantage is that it is a single-dose vaccine, and according to CanSino Biologics Inc., the developer of the vaccine, it is 65.3% effective against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection.

In addition to Hungary, the vaccine has so far been approved in China, Pakistan, Chile, and Mexico.

The single-dose vaccine could greatly advance the fight against the virus, although the next step in Hungary’s vaccination program is still uncertain because of the growing vaccine hesitancy.

PM Orbán interview: “this virus will not just go away” – UPDATED

PM Viktor Orbán Hungary

The number of patients treated for Covid-19 in hospital has dropped below 1,000 and the number of active infections is below 100,000 for the first time in a long while, the prime minister said on Friday.

The number of patients in need of respiratory assistance is 121, Viktor Orbán told public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió in his regular interview. The number of those with active infection stands at 84,719, Orban said.

These people’s health is under threat, with some of them still struggling for their life,

he added.

The prime minister said that some 25,000 people had received their first jab and 117,000 got their second shot on Thursday. “This is good news, but another 3 million adults have not yet been inoculated, and it is a scientific fact that this virus will not just go away,” Orbán said.

He said many are wrong to believe that they can “escape” getting infected with coronavirus without being inoculated.

“This virus will find even the very last person who is unprotected,”

Orbán said, insisting that “only by getting vaccinated can we protect our own health and the health of our families”.

Organising the vaccination drive has been a huge challenge and the fact that Hungary has performed better than the US, which is a vaccine producer itself, in terms of first vaccinations is reason for self-respect, he added. Orbán said

everybody was afraid of the Indian variant of the virus and added that all the vaccines administered in Hungary without exception were able to combat it.

He described reports claiming that several EU member states would not allow entry for people inoculated with eastern vaccines as fear-mongering. “Many countries are not yet discussing travel options because they are still far from it but Hungary is signing a series of bilateral agreements that will enable free movement,” Orban said. A common European Union vaccination card might be available in July and it will oblige all member countries to allow entry for people inoculated with EU approved vaccines, he said. The countries will have the option to also accept other vaccines and “no country will want to block itself from tourists”, he added.

The next task now is to relaunch the country’s economy,

Orbán said. When the pandemic was at its peak, enacting measures to protect the economy was also important to save jobs and incomes, however, with the third wave “having been floored”, the focus must shift from protection to restarting the economy, he added. Orban said the 2022 budget would be dedicated to these efforts, adding that second-quarter figures for this year were already promising.

Commenting on an EU summit held this week, he said everybody agreed on the importance of climate protection but the positions varied on how the burdens should be distributed. Different countries cannot bear the same amount of burden, he said. The idea to make people pay the costs of climate protection might sound natural in the west where good living standards allow ample space of maneuvering for this but Hungary cannot and does not want to make people pay an extra tax for this purpose after several years dedicated to efforts to lower public utility fees.

Orbán said it was unacceptable “to spread around” the costs of climate protection.

Central European countries believe it is mostly the large companies that are responsible for damaging the climate and people should not be made to pay the price. The next two or three years will be dedicated to climate protection, he said, adding that efforts to reduce utility costs would also have to continue.

He also said that he had met the leader of Spain’s right-wing VOX party on Thursday and discussed issues that have recently been suppressed by the fight against the pandemic, such as climate protection and illegal migration.

When Hungary decided in 2015 to build a fence along its southern border, Spain was among the critics, but now they have a higher fence erected on their border than Hungary, he added. An upcoming and serious party has now strengthened the group of anti-migration forces, he said referring to VOX.

Commenting on his upcoming meeting with UK counterpart Boris Johnson in London later in the day, Orbán said he will

“seek special areas of cooperation”.

Orbán noted that the UK and countries in central Europe have common views on issues such as reducing bureaucracy and standing up for national sovereignty and said their position had been weakened by the UK’s departure from the European Union.

“[The UK] hasn’t left Europe, just the EU, so they’re still here.

The question is: where will their place in the world be? They’re negotiating with everybody, establishing bilateral relations. We too have to establish a British-Hungarian trade and economic cooperation,” Orban said.

Commenting on the 15th anniversary of a later leaked speech that former Socialist Prime Minister and current opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) leader Ferenc Gyurcsány made at a closed-door Socialist party meeting in Őszöd, in which he said his government had been “lying day and night”, Orbán said the events surrounding it are hard to forget, including the revolts it caused. “It is shocking that the person who caused the revolts is still present in Hungarian politics and nobody has taken responsibility or extended an apology for those events, Orbán said. He said that Gyurcsany was still “the boss on the opposite side” and people he knew from the Gyurcsany government were making a comeback in the City Hall, with

“the Gyurcsány government practically reestablishing itself behind the back of the mayor of Budapest”.

Orbán said it was parents’ responsibility to tell their children what events took place after the Őszöd speech.

Major investments in the Hungarian medical supplies and construction industry

Daily News Hungary

Medical supplies company Jako-Meditec of Szekszárd, in western Hungary, has expanded its capacity to make vials also used for virus tests, Finance Minister Mihály Varga said in a video posted on Saturday.

The investment worth 1.7 billion forints (€ 4.8 million) was supported with a government grant of 1.6 billion forints (€ 4.5 million), the minister said, adding that headcount at the company doubled to 70 as a result.

Varga said the project is one of those supported in the framework of the government scheme supporting investments by health-care businesses, with the aim to boost Hungary’s self-sufficiency in such products.

He cited the examples of Vajda-Papír, which has already produced more than 50 million face masks in the recent period, Meditop, which has turned out ten million favipiravir tablets, and F-Team, which makes 140,000 disinfectant dispensers a year and will start deliveries to hospitals.

Additionally, in another sector, the Hungarian real estate developer

Bayer Construct has purchased ten tower cranes for 3 billion forints (EUR 8.6m), with the procurement being supported by a 1-billion-forint (€ 2.8 million) government grant,

Finance Minister Mihály Varga said on Sunday.

The investment will also allow Bayer Construct, which employs over 400 people, to increase its headcount, Varga said on Facebook.

The tower cranes purchased by the company are capable of lifting as much as 12 tonnes to heights of 70-90 metres, the minister said.

Varga said the construction industry was a key sector when it comes to rebooting Hungary’s economy.

He highlighted the reduced VAT on home construction, the government’s investment support scheme and the expansion of its home creation scheme as measures designed to boost the sector.

Hospital visiting ban to be lifted next week in Hungary

Hungary will partially lift a ban on hospital visits from Monday, the chief medical officer has said.

Visitors, however, will still not be allowed to visit patients being treated for Covid-19, Cecília Müller told an online press briefing.

Patients in other units will only be allowed one visitor a day, who will have to present an immunity certificate and stay for not more than an hour, she said.

As regards vaccines, Müller said Hungary is scheduled to receive 54,800 doses of the Moderna jab on Thursday and 55,200 doses of AstraZeneca, all of which are to be used as second shots.

Foreign Minister Szijjártó: Hungary pandemic response most successful in Europe

Hungary’s timely steps to purchase vaccines has allowed it to mount the most effective response to the coronavirus pandemic out of all European countries, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said during a break in a meeting with his EU counterparts in Brussels on Thursday.

“The reason why we’re in first place in vaccinations in Europe is because we bought enough vaccines in time,” Szijjártó said.

Hungary has enough vaccines in stock, the minister said. The country will have more than 10 million doses of Eastern and Western jabs delivered by the end of next year, he said, adding that those shipments would suffice if a third shot becomes necessary.

Also, Hungary will begin operating its own vaccine plant at the end of 2022, Szijjarto said, adding that the jabs produced there would also be sufficient to inoculate everyone who has registered for vaccination. “This makes it completely unnecessary to buy more vaccines,” he said.

As regards the intellectual property rights on Covid vaccines, Szijjártó said Hungary believed the most important thing was to manufacture as many vaccines in as many places as possible.

“It is by continuously increasing vaccine production capacities that we can best protect the world from the pandemic, and less so by bureaucratic measures,” he said.

Concerning the EU’s planned vaccine passports, Szijjártó said any debate on the matter was premature as long as the bloc’s average vaccination rate was around 30 percent and many member states were struggling to build public trust in and procure vaccines.

“Let’s have enough vaccines first and let’s have people vaccinated,” he said. Hungary will oppose discrimination based on vaccines when it comes to the vaccine passports and rules on entry, he added.

Hungarian woman with COVID awakes from coma to find she’s a mother

hungary woman coma

Hungarian mother Szilvia Bedő-Nagy only found out she had given birth to baby daughter Napsugár when she was brought out of an induced coma more than a month later, having tested positive for COVID-19 and contracted pneumonia.

She was heavily pregnant when she was diagnosed with COVID-19 late last year and was sent home to quarantine. But as her condition worsened, she was rushed back to hospital.

“I couldn’t breathe,” Bedő-Nagy told Radio Free Europe from her home in the rural town of Hatvan. “It turned out that it was pneumonia.”

She was transferred to Budapest and Napsugár, which is Hungarian for “sunshine”, was born by caesarean section. Bedő-Nagy was put in the intensive care unit on a ventilator, then an artificial lung and finally into an induced coma.

While she was in hospital, her husband József Bedő cared for their daughter, fearing that his wife might not survive.

Hungary has the world’s highest COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people, according to Johns Hopkins University data, and in some hospitals as many as 80% of the patients on ventilators did not survive.

But around Christmas time, Bedő received a call from a doctor who said his wife had been woken up.

“The doctor said my wife was trying to make contact with me,” Bedő said. “The next day, I went to pay her a visit. She was awake and when I asked her something, she would answer me with her eyes.”

New Year’s Eve, 2020, was the first time Bedő-Nagy remembers being awake after her ordeal, but she said she still did not know what had happened.

“I had no idea what was going on. I was pointing to my belly to ask when I gave birth … Then the doctor said the baby had been born a while ago.”

Her doctor, Béla Merkely, said Bedő-Nagy’s was a fascinating, unusually complicated case.

Bedő-Nagy is making a good recovery at home together with her husband and Napsugár.

A day in the life of a Hungarian Covid hospital – shaking VIDEO

Dr. László Elek hospital

Covid diaries from Orosháza 2021. This is the title of the 15-minute-long video uploaded to YouTube by the Dr László Elek Hospital and Clinic of Orosháza.

In Hungary, the coronavirus disease has caused incredibly high numbers in terms of mortality and patients treated in hospitals, numbers that sadly became record data in Europe.

Unmet healthcare needs in the EU: Hungary ranks first

The situation seems to be mitigated to some extent, thanks to the vaccination process. As almost half of Hungary’s population has received at least the first jab, the country has started to reopen. So much that starting from this Wednesday, for instance, the Lupa Beach will be open to anyone without the restriction to have the immunity certificate.

PM Orbán: Hungary may be the first to return to normal life

This positive development and amelioration of the circumstances are the fruits of the hard work that health care professionals and everyone working in a hospital provide every day.

The short film drives us through a 12-hour-long shift in the hospital, filmed on April 23, with the help of a professional nurse and the chief physician of the ICU. Many people contributed to the film by sharing their experience. Professional caregivers, nurses, physiotherapists, doctors and even some patients talked about how they lived the past year. As infostart.hu writes, one of the film’s protagonists even shares her experience of how she first said she would not get vaccinated, but after having worked in the covid unit, she now convinced her whole family to do so.

The video claims to

present how the hospital of a small town fights the virus, especially all its employees as a group and how they collectively, as a strong entity, go against an illness never seen before.

They show us drawings and heart-warming letters sent by family members to cheer up their loved ones; they share with us how emotionally challenging it is to see someone of their own age having difficulties breathing and having to be ventilated. They shared the details of the everyday pressure and physical exhaustion, how tired and sweaty they all are after 4 hours long shift when they finally get to take off those vast, several layers thick suits protecting both the patients and those caring for them.

“Since Autumn, it has been different, emotionally.

It is a fact that we saw more younger people being ill, in worse conditions…

This first dragged us down, but since then, as they get better and better and can leave the ICU, it is an incredibly good feeling” – says Ágnes Márkus Patakiné, deputy chief nurse and professional assistant of anaesthetics.

One of the patients talks about how fragile he was during his illness. Moreover, he needed to have surgery on his lungs. He feels better now and is working with a physiotherapist to recuperate completely.

He talks with great appreciation in his voice about all doctors and nurses.

He also adds that what he misses most is his family.

The video also shows the process of a new patient with pneumonia arriving at the hospital, how professionals hold their first consultation and start the treatment.

Despite all this, they all have something positive to say. From encouraging words of a doctor, advising everyone to get inoculated as it is the only way to stop this madness, to the smiling face of a patient who had just had his birthday lying in a hospital bed, celebrating without his family or a simple birthday treat. They all say something positive and motivating that drives them forward every day.

The video ends with a lovely letter from an old patient written to all hospital employees. They all say that these letters and these words give them the strength to continue.

Fire ravages hospital in Philippines treating COVID-19 patients

Fire Firefighter

Firefighters put out a blaze early on Sunday at one of the Philippines’ largest hospitals that had prompted the evacuation of dozens of patients from the facility, which also treats coronavirus sufferers.

No casualties were reported in the fire at the government-run Philippine General Hospital in the capital, Manila, which was extinguished at dawn. Its cause is not known.

On Twitter, Vice President Leni Robredo made an appeal for “big, industrial fans” to clear the smoke caused by the fire.

Hospital authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.

Some patients were transferred to nearby hospitals, including two who needed surgery and 12 babies from the neonatal intensive care unit, CNN Philippines said, citing hospital officials.

Hospital staff said the fire started in an operating room supply area soon after midnight.

The hospital has more than 1,300 beds and treats 600,000 patients a year, it says on its website.

With more than 1.1 million infections and deaths in excess of 19,000, the Philippines ranks second in Southeast Asia in terms of COVID-19 cases.

Hospital closures in Hungary? The ministry denies

coronavirus covid 19 hungary hospital ventilator

The government will “not close any hospitals”, the human resources ministry said on Saturday in the wake of opposition allegations.

The ministry referred to analyst Zsombor Kunetz, who had suggested that hospitals and outpatient clinics could be closed down under a recent circular by the ministry.

In its annual circular, the ministry “always asks health leaders what changes are needed in health services with a view to the actual situation,” the ministry said in its statement, adding that

“this has never resulted in hospital closures nor will it this time”.

As we reported before, in April, opposition Democratic Coalition filed a request for public data with Hungary’s national health insurance fund NEAK on the number of elderly Covid-19 hospital patients who have died due to a shortage of ventilators. In an online press conference, DK’s parliamentary spokesman Zoltán Varga cited the deputy head of the Trade Union of Hungarian Medical Doctors as telling commercial news channel ATV that certain hospitals could not place their 65-70-year-old patients on ventilators because of all the young patients requiring respiratory assistance.

Varga said the coronavirus was “only an accomplice” in Hungary’s Covid fatalities,

insisting that it was primarily the government’s “anti-health-care policies of the last ten years”

that were to blame for the death toll. He said Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and members of his government would need to be held accountable “for the tragedies they have caused” if a new government came into power.

Ruling Fidesz said in reaction that “the Gyurcsány-led left wing” was once again attacking protective efforts against the coronavirus epidemic. The party said in a statement that DK’s claims were “nonsense and once again lashing up sentiments’. “The left wing started fabricating fake news, fake videos and fake extras and attacking the professionals involved in defence already during the first wave of the epidemic. Now they are once again doing the same.

We are asking the left wing at least not to hinder protection if they refuse to help,”

Fidesz said then.

The application for the immunity certificate can now be downloaded

The application “substituting” the plastic card proving protection against coronavirus infection is now available for download. The app is available here (after logging in).

The completion of the application was announced by government spokesman Alexandra Szentkirályi on Thursday’s government information. She said the app will also be available on mobile phones with Android and iOS and will include the name of the vaccinee, the date of the vaccinations, and the type of vaccination – which is not on the plastic card-based security certificates.

However, when installing the application, only one QR code is displayed, below our name, number of shots, date of vaccination and the state of protection, the type of vaccination is not.

Read more about the app HERE.

Currently, there are eight countries accepting the Hungarian immunity certificate:

  • Bahrein
  • Romania
  • the Czech Republic
  • Slovenia
  • Serbia
  • Turkey
  • North Macedonia
  • Montenegro

Hungary to receive several vaccine shipments this week

Hungary vaccine

Hungary will receive shipments of Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines this week, the government website koronavirus.gov.hu said on Tuesday.

A shipment of Pfizer vaccines and 200,000 doses of second-shot Sputnik vaccine are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, the website said. It added that people who choose to get Sputnik are advised to book a time for vaccination without delay because only limited amounts of Sputnik are left at the hospital inoculation points.

Hungary continues to be at second place in Europe in terms of the proportion of the population vaccinated,

the site said. Some 44 percent of Hungarians have been vaccinated as against the EU average of 28 percent, it added.

A total of 4.971 million people have registered for vaccination so far

and some 80 percent have received at least their first shot, the website said. Vaccination is currently offered to all age groups and it can be booked online. Currently bookings can be made for vaccination with Sinopharm, AstraZeneca and Sputnik, it said.

Hungary has signed up for a total of 24 million doses of vaccine from the EU, of which some 20 percent has been received from four manufacturers, including Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen. Pfizer has supplied the largest amount, 3.2 million doses of its vaccine.
