Coronavirus – Epidemic action unit to isolate clusters in Hungary

A special epidemic action unit investigating coronavirus clusters will be isolating any groups that may be infected in order to prevent the virus from spreading further, a spokesman for the operative board coordinating Hungary’s response to the novel coronavirus epidemic said on Friday.

The first phase of protection against the epidemic has been successfully completed but the threat of the epidemic has not been eliminated and that’s why a new special epidemic action unit has been set up, Robert Kiss told a press conference.

The unit will be tasked with coordinating the work of cooperating authorities including the army, the disaster management authority, the medical officer service and the ambulance services and to ensure that resources are used most efficiently, he added.

The unit will have the authority to order restrictive measures, he said.

Department head of the national disaster management directorate Péter Jackovics said a mobile lab operated by the disaster management authority will be made available to the new unit.

Medical director of the national ambulance service György Pápai said they had been involved in screening travellers at border crossings ever since the start of the epidemic and had taken 60,000 samples from members of the public. The ambulance services are also involved in transporting patients suspected of carrying the virus.

Head of the state medical services centre AEEK Enikő Halachy said the organisation was tasked with supplying protective gear for health sector workers, the police, the army and to elderly homes.

Pál Szabó, a spokesman for the national hospital chief command support unit, said that 92 hospital commanders were helping anti-epidemic efforts around Hungary. Additionally, 19 commanders started work in elderly homes with over 200 residents at the end of April, tasked with protecting medical stocks and monitoring compliance with anti-epidemic regulations.

Janos Miklovich, the head of the army’s chemical protection unit, said the unit was tasked with protection against chemical, biological and nuclear weapons and was therefore equipped with tools that could be effectively used in anti-epidemic operations. Its disinfection teams can be deployed at any location and at any time, he added.

Cancer and respiratory diseases still take most lives in Hungary

hospital, death, heatlh, Hungary

In most of the EU countries, the main reason for fatal incidents is respiratory problems, except for Denmark, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands where cancer is the number one reason. In Hungary, every second fatal incident at hospitals is connected to respiratory problems while every fourth to cancer.

Read alsoShocking! Number of patients diagnosed with cancer in the EU is the highest in Hungary

Pénzcentrum reported that Hungary is the seventh out of all EU countries where every second patient at hospitals dies of respiratory problems, which is 48.9% of all sick people. Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria are ahead of Hungary with more than 50%. Cancer is the most severe problem in Slovenia, while the country with the fewest diagnosed patients is Bulgaria.

According to data, out of 131,045 Hungarian patients, almost 33,000 died of cancer and 24,000 of respiratory problems.

Between 1995 and 2015, the number of cancer-diagnosed people increased from six to nine million; the most common is lung cancer because of the too many smokers. There are currently 1.3 billion smoking people in the world, and lung cancer appears in every second person’s system, which is 90% of the total number. Approximately five million people die each year because of smoking.

In Hungary, almost 40,000 people die; one person smokes 2,000 cigarettes a year on average.

Almost 4,000 people are registered with respiratory diseases each month in Hungary, and that is why half of the nation suffers from and dies of these diseases. In 2018, almost 26,000 Hungarian people died of heart attacks and other respiratory problems.

Hungarian and worldwide smoking trends are still shocking

Smoking causes severe damage in people’s health, the countries’ economy, and society worldwide. Since 1990, more than one million people had died in the country due to this addictive habit, reported a Hungarian scientist.

Prosecution ends against Iranian university students expelled from Hungary

iranian students

The prosecution has been terminated against the Iranian students who were expelled from Hungary in March due to the violation of quarantine rules. Furthermore, the Interior Ministry confirmed that Hungarian authorities have begun to revoke the decision of their expulsion.

On 4 March, two Iranian students were the first to be diagnosed with coronavirus in Hungary. After detecting their relationships, several students in medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry – who had been in contact with them – were under observation at St. László Hospital.

However, a few days later, a total of nineteen students were expelled from Hungary due to misbehaviour and violation of quarantine rules.

Four of the Iranians – who had not yet been deported from Hungary – can now remain in Hungary. As Hungarian news portal 444 reports, in their case, the criminal proceedings were dropped, the expulsion decision was revoked, and their passports were returned. Out of the other 15 students who had been deported from the country, 12 have already submitted requests for the cancellation of expulsion and prohibition of entry and stay; their petitions are being processed.

The epidemiological emergency officially ended on 18 June, after which proceedings against the Iranian students were terminated.

The four Iranians – who were not deported from Hungary – are still in Budapest. In the case of 11 of their fellow students who were deported to Iran, the criminal proceedings have also ceased. However, among the nineteen students, there are four more who are still being prosecuted for another “group riot”. According to the police, these four students – two boys and two girls – were “at the forefront” of the disturbances at St. László Hospital, when two Iranian students reportedly threw chairs out of the ward; the charges were denied by the students.

Criminal proceedings against them for violating the quarantine rules have also been terminated, but due to the harassment proceedings, they may not be able to return to Hungary in the near future.

The majority of Iranian students studied at Semmelweis University. The leadership of the university reassured them that their case was represented at the “top level” by the institution’s rector who suggested that the foreign students apologise in writing for their inadmissible behaviour. The majority of students refused to do so; however, some of them listened to the rector’s advise and wrote an apology letter, in which they apologised for the misbehaviour of their fellow students.

As the university’s management said, they feel a responsibility to every student; therefore, they continuously monitored the situation and took every opportunity to represent their interests when needed. However, the aforementioned Iranian students did not behave in accordance with their student vows, so they were asked by the university management to apologise to the doctors and specialists of the hospital.

Novel coronavirus could have existed long before outbreak, says WHO official

coronavirus

The novel coronavirus could have existed in a dormant state long before its outbreak, Melita Vujnovic, the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) to Russia, has said.

“WHO has established a large team that will work together with Chinese scientists to analyze the origin of the virus,” Vujnovic said in a recent interview with RIA Novosti news agency.

“This virus lived in animals and at some point passed to humans. It’s hard to say when and where this happened. It’s being investigated.

Viruses can be found in waste water. But nothing can be said specifically,” she said.

The novel coronavirus has existed worldwide and broke out whenever and wherever favorable conditions occurred rather than starting in China, Tom Jefferson, senior associate tutor at the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at Oxford and a visiting professor at Newcastle University, said earlier this month.

Spanish virologists have discovered traces of the novel coronavirus in a sample of Barcelona waste water collected in March 2019, nine months prior to the virus outbreak in China.

According to the Italian National Institute of Health, samples of sewage water from Milan and Turin showed traces of the novel coronavirus on Dec. 18, long before the country’s first confirmed cases.

Vujnovic said that scientists are studying these samples and if there is any “revolutionary result,” the WHO will immediately announce it.

U.S. formal notification of withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) is “dangerous to human life” as the world faces not only the COVID-19 threat but also the threat of future pandemics, a U.S. public health expert said Wednesday.

As global COVID-19 infections top 12 million, with a vaccine still not in sight, “withdrawal is counterintuitive at best and dangerous to human life at worst,” Amanda

Glassman, also executive vice president of the Center for Global Development think tank, told USA Today. “The U.S. Congress should immediately explore what power it has to prevent this from happening.”

WASHINGTON

Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute Dr. Ashish Jha criticized the U.S. move to officially withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday, noting that its blame on WHO for not investigating the COVID-19 outbreak in China is “deeply disingenuous.”

“I think it’s an extraordinarily bad decision that will both harm global public health and harm the health of the American people,” Jha was quoted as saying by the New York Times. “It’s unclear to me how the American people benefit by not being at the table and not being able to shape those policies.”

A significant number of younger COVID-19 patients in the United States end up with long-term health complications and the exponential spread of the disease will make the protection of the vulnerable an impossible task, a local paper has warned.

California reported on Wednesday the biggest daily jump of 11,694 COVID-19 cases as the positivity rate and hospitalization rate are trending upward in the 14-day average in the most populous U.S. state.

The California Department of Public Health also confirmed 114 new COVID-19 deaths in a daily update. So far, 289,468 confirmed cases and 6,562 deaths have been registered across the state.

Morocco registered 164 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, raising the tally of infections in the North African country to 14,771, the Ministry of Health said.

Hungary will be a greater power in breathing machines than the USA

Once the 6,000 breathing machines the government ordered arrive, there will be 163 of such life support systems per 100,000 people in Hungary while this number is only 54 in the United States. Meanwhile, the average is only 26 in the 22 countries a new survey looked at, but they did not take into consideration the price and the quality of the machines.

According to euronews.com, in Asia, Japan has 45,293 machines for their 126 million people, which means that their rate is 35 per 100 thousand. The situation is worse in South Korea with 19 and much worse in India with only 3.5. In the USA, there are 177 thousand breathing machines, which translates to 54 per 100 thousand, while this number is only 1.6 in the case of Mexico. In Australia and New Zealand, the numbers are 5.3 and 6.8.

Meanwhile, in Europe,

Sweden has only 5.5 breathing machines per 100 thousand people

while in Italy, this number is only 8.8. In the Czech Republic, they have 33 per 100 thousand while in Portugal, it is 13.6.

In Hungary, the situation is much better, even better than in the United States where the virus is still spreading quickly. If the last shipment containing 6,000 additional breathing machines arrives, there will be 163 machines per 100 thousand people.

The secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade responsible for the issue said that they ordered 16 thousand breathing machines before, but

they were not sure which ones would arrive.

Today, 10 thousand is already in Hungary, and they expect that an additional 6,000 will shortly arrive. At the beginning of the epidemic, there were 1,600 breathing machines in Hungary based on what Cecília Müller, the chief medical officer of the country, said.

According to 24, since many tragedies happened due to the lack of breathing machines, the Hungarian government entrusted the Budapest University of Technology and Economics to develop such machines. Based on the plans, the future factory will be able to

produce 10 machines per day.
