Protective gear from China arrived on 121 aircraft so far in Hungary

coronavirus delivery from china

Hungary has so far received protective gear from China on 121 aircraft, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Thursday.

After talks with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, he said he had expressed thanks for the help that Chinese authorities have granted to Hungary in acquiring health equipment necessary for protective measures. The equipment received on 121 aircraft includes masks, gloves, protective clothing and ventilators.

Shipments will continue in the upcoming months, he added.

Economic cooperation between Hungary and China has continued to develop, with nine large Chinese investments arriving in Hungary in the past three years, Szijjártó said. The value of Chinese investments in Hungary is at an all-time high and they have brought high-quality, modern technology to Hungary, he said.

Digitalisation and 5G technology play an important role in the Hungarian economy’s reconfiguration. He noted that 5G has been available in central Budapest since last autumn after Huawei developed it for Vodafone, he said.

Szijjártó said funding for upgrading the Budapest-Belgrade rail line is guaranteed thanks to the recent signing of an agreement, opening up the shortest and fastest route for Chinese goods arriving in Greek ports to western Europe via Hungary.

Financial cooperation between the two countries has progressed well, with excellent cooperation between the central banks of Hungary and China, he said.

The banks have agreed to expand cooperation in the future, he noted.

Coronavirus: Hungarian hospital successfully used Tocilizumab therapy to save the life of a doctor

Gábor Gyergyai owes his life to the treatment of the South-Pest Hospital Centre (abbreviated DPC in Hungarian), he is the first patient to recover with Tocilizumab therapy.

Gábor Gyergyai works as a general practitioner and school doctor in Dunaharaszti. He told Magyar Nemzet that he still worked on March 20, but the following day, he felt a general malaise, accompanied by a fever and diarrhoea. To the best of his knowledge, he had not contacted a coronavirus patient before, so he did not think he was infected with COVID-19.

However, his symptoms did not improve, so on Monday, he decided to visit the Emergency Department at Semmelweis University. After he tested positive for coronavirus, he was ordered to stay in home quarantine. Four days later, his breathing difficulties worsened, so he was transported to the South-Pest Hospital Centre. His condition soon turned critical, so he had to be transferred to the intensive care unit, where he was anesthetised for thirteen days and attached to a breathing machine.

The doctor found out afterwards that

he was the first patient to receive Tocilizumab therapy in DPC, which contributed significantly to his survival.

After his condition improved, the doctor received physiotherapy at the hospital’s aftercare department, and he was sent home to recover.

Tocilizumab is an immunosuppressive drug that is mainly used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. However, it has emerged as an alternative treatment for COVID‐19 patients.

Some research has already been conducted on the efficacy of Tocilizumab therapy in severe patients with coronavirus, and it has been shown to be an effective treatment to reduce mortality.

“I am recovering and getting stronger at home since then, but it will take at least two months before to regain 80 per cent of my original physical condition,” said the doctor. He added that his wife and children were infected too, but they only experienced mild symptoms.

5 killed, 150 evacuated after fire hits St. Petersburg hospital

Five people were killed and 150 others evacuated on Tuesday after a fire broke out in a hospital in the Vyborgsky district of St. Petersburg, Russia

Five people were killed and 150 others evacuated on Tuesday after a fire broke out in a hospital in the Vyborgsky district of St. Petersburg, Russia’s second biggest city, according to local emergency services.

The dead included patients in the intensive care unit in the St. George City Hospital, and the flames engulfed an area of 10 square meters, Sputnik quoted the Russian Emergencies Ministry as saying.

The hospital has been renovated to receive patients infected with the novel coronavirus since mid-March, local media reported.

Preliminary inquiries show that electric equipment malfunction and short-circuit failure are among the factors behind the fire , according to the emergency services.

Russia reports over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours

Russia has confirmed 10,899 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total number of infections to 232,243, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Tuesday.

The single-day increase has been over 10,000 for 10 consecutive days, the center’s data showed.

The death toll grew by 107 to 2,116, while 43,512 people have recovered, including 3,711 over the last 24 hours, the statement said.

Moscow, the country’s worst-hit region, confirmed 5,392 new cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 121,301.

Russia’s consumer rights and human well-being watchdog said in a statement Tuesday that 251,011 people had been under medical observation as of Monday.

More than 5.8 million lab tests for COVID-19 have been conducted across the country so far, it added.

The period of non-working days, which has lasted for six weeks, ended from Tuesday for the whole country and for all sectors of the economy, President Vladimir Putin said Monday.

“But the fight against the pandemic is not over. Its danger persists, even in territories where the situation is relatively favorable,” he warned in a televised address to the nation.

Woman spends days in awful COVID-19 isolation room in Budapest – VIDEO

coronavirus hungary nurse

In the middle of a global pandemic, patients in the isolation rooms in National Korányi Tbc and Pulmonological Institute have no access to a shower, a decent, clean toilet, or hot water.

According to the new regulations, from now on, all patients with either moderate, severe or critical COVID-19 infections will be transported to and treated in two locations in Hungary: the National Korányi Tbc and Pulmonological Institute, and the National Institute for Infectiology and Haematology at South-Pest Hospital Centre.

A 40-year-old Hungarian woman noticed the symptoms in April, she started coughing and had a hard time breathing. Her first COVID-19 test was negative, but her symptoms got much worse, so she was sent to Korányi Hospital for further PCR tests to make sure that she is not infected with the virus. She was transported to one of the so-called isolation rooms inside the hospital. People usually have to spend at least four days here because they are being tested twice to get a more reliable result.

She told her not so pleasant experiences in the isolation room to 444.hu. She was not allowed to leave the room until they made sure that she was not infected. The place she was supposed to spend four whole days was miserable.

She claimed that her whole experience in the isolation room was a “stamping on human dignity.”

This place did not support basic human hygiene. There was a sink, but no cold water, and there was no place for her to shower at all. She could not bare not cleaning herself for four days in these circumstances, so she cleaned out the garbage bin, climbed in it and tried to “shower” with cold water from the sink. There was also no decent toilet, only a portable one which was not changed nor cleaned. The trash was also not taken out for days.

She also said that the heat was on the entire time she was there, even though it was 28 degrees Celsius outside. She could not bear the heat anymore, so she had to take the whole window out to let some air in.

She did emphasise that even though the circumstances were outrageous, she was satisfied with the nurses who were kind and helpful.

She documented her experiences in the isolation room. Take a look at it in the videos below.

Hungarian doctor who put a patient in danger is allowed to continue to work, with conditions

A Hungarian paediatric surgeon, Dr György Rákóczy, was suspended for three months in 2012 after he injected a four-year-old patient with a potentially fatal dose of carbolic acid during an operation. He failed the English language exam six times.

The doctor graduated in 1979 from the Semmelweis University of Medicine, and he became a pediatric surgeon in 1989. He has been practising in the UK since 2005. Dailymail reported that Dr Rákóczy did not manage to overcome the difficulties of learning English, and after he failed the language exam in reading, writing, listening, and speaking several times, concerns were raised about his grasp of the language.

He argued that he was discriminated against since it is rather difficult for older people to learn a new language.

Last year, he was placed under conditional registration and required to improve his language skills and complete an English language assessment course. However, he still has not passed his exams. Dr Rákóczy claimed that the IELTS tests were not appropriate for learners over the age of 60.

The consultant paediatric surgeon was found guilty of ‘serious professional misconduct’ and was suspended in 2012 after

he wrongly injected a young boy with a concentration of 80% Phenol, which is 16 times the proper dose. The patient suffered serious internal injuries and had to undergo over 30 corrective operations.

Dr Rákóczy even submitted a complaint to the General Medical Council, referring to his age as a hindering factor, and asked for permission to practise without any restriction. The Tribunal did not accept his submission, arguing that age is not an acceptable excuse to be allowed to practise unrestricted and risk patients’ health without the necessary language skills. The Tribunal also concluded that since his specialism is not vital in the fight against coronavirus, the pandemic crisis cannot be regarded as an exceptional circumstance.

According to the current decision, Dr Rákóczy’s fitness to practise is still impaired due to his inadequate language skills, but he is allowed to return to work at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for one year under certain conditions.

Minister signs vaccine production pact with Debrecen University

Coronavirus test China Hungary

Hungary’s goal is to become self-sufficient in vaccine production, similarly to other areas, the human resources minister said, after signing a cooperation agreement on vaccine production with the University of Debrecen in Budapest on Friday.

The current coronavirus pandemic has shown the importance of vaccination and has drawn attention to the importance of domestic production, Miklós Kásler told a press conference after the ceremony.

The pandemic forced China to temporarily suspend the exports of drug substances and medical equipment which put other countries into a difficult situation, he said.

Debrecen University has been preparing for vaccine production for years and has started to build the infrastructure for that, the minister said.

Hungary has a world-class vaccination protocol and a vaccination rate of 98 percent, Kásler said, noting that the government spends an annual 10 billion forints (EUR 28.6m) on vaccinations.

Cecília Müller, the chief medical officer, told the same press conference that vaccination plays a key role in primary prevention. She called it important for Hungary to become independent from foreign markets by ensuring continuous supply of domestically produced vaccines.

Robot greets patients in a clinic in Budapest

pepper robot

It might be unexpected to some, but a human-shaped robot named Pepper is working in a private clinic in Buda. The task of the robot is to pre-screen and interview the patients, and to guide those who are suspected to be infected with coronavirus to the appropriate doctor, according to protocol.

Robots are already being used in Asia to reduce human contact, which is especially important in healthcare facilities now, but there is also a Hungarian example of this phenomenon, as Forbes learned from Netlife Robotics.

An extraordinary image greets patients who enter a private clinic in Buda; a nearly 1.5-metre-high, human-like robot is the first to greet those arriving for medical care. The robot, named Pepper, is capable of gestures and immediately greets patients who come to the practice. It introduces itself and says that it wants to ask some questions regarding the coronavirus. If the patient accepts and starts to talk to the robot, Pepper follows the usual questioning protocol: among other things, it asks if the patient has a fever, coughs, or has come in contact with a person infected with the coronavirus.

If the robot has received a negative answer to all of his five questions, Pepper reports that no coronavirus infection is suspected and asks the patient to go to the reception, where they can check in with the doctor, now with the help of the human staff. If the answer to any single one of those questions is affirmative, Pepper advises the patient to consult their general practitioner, who will decide on the necessary further steps.

The robot can do tasks without a mask or gloves, and early feedback seem favourable

Hungary’s first humanoid robot to perform the task of a healthcare assistant was deployed to help make work in the practice safer.

“We found that patients like the first, non-traditional greeting and are happy to cooperate with the robot. It is easier for our colleagues that the robot takes over this simple, yet burdensome, repetitive process,” said the medical director of the Budai Magánorvosi Centrum (approx.: Private Medical Centre of Buda). According to Dr Alexandra Pácz, although the use of human-shaped robots is still unique in Hungary, there are many examples of their use worldwide.

Pepper’s peers work as receptionists in hospitals in Belgium, Australia, and Canada, where they also help with routine tasks, or children can play with them. Robots are also involved in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. In a “smart hospital” in China, robots took a number of tasks off the shoulders of the nursing staff, and some places are experimenting with robots disinfecting hospital units with UV light.

“The coronavirus also puts healthcare providers in a new position, and in addition to our expertise and flexibility, we have also called on technology to help deal with the situation. The unexpected effect of our new, robot colleague, aside from automating our pre-screening protocol, is that it helps create a cheerful atmosphere, which is an important part of recovery. If our customers like Pepper and give positive feedback about it, we will consider using it after the coronavirus pandemic,” said Dr Alexandra Pácz.

Robots in a hospital, how does it work?

A Hungarian development team trained the robot to communicate in Hungarian in just two weeks.

Pepper can perform its tasks thanks to the technology of artificial intelligence. The peculiarity of this technology is that it not only recognises and gives answers to predetermined questions but also tries to react and create answers to new ones, based on previous patterns by adapting to the new situation.

Therefore, this technology typically spreads in telephone customer services and chatrooms. In the near future, robots like Pepper are expected to appear in more and more places, such as tourist-information points, personal customer services, and even stores.

“They can help people take on monotonous tasks that don’t necessarily require physical contact,” explained Levente Bartha, the CEO of Netlife Robotics, the company developing the robot.

The market for deployable robots is rapidly growing

Market analysts are also expecting increasing trade in the robotics market. According to a forecast, global demand for robots will grow by 25% each year, and it is expected to reach $100 billion this year. In addition to the need for automation, the phenomenon of social distancing in connection with the coronavirus pandemic has also driven up demand, as robots can work without contact, even in the most dangerous locations, with remote, human control, if necessary.

Coronavirus – Orbán: First battle against the virus ‘won’

orbán in the parliament

The “first battle” against novel coronavirus has been won in Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview on Friday.

Orbán told public broadcaster Kossuth Radio that the virus had been contained.

“We’ve managed to develop methods of control and gain time,” he said, adding that the health-care system had successfully prepared itself to handle the crisis.

The prime minister noted, however, that the virus had not yet been eliminated in Hungary.

“We’ve just prepared to ward off the next attack,” he said, citing expert opinion that a second wave was expected around October-November.

He added that if the death rate in Budapest fell, the government would not hesitate to allow residents of the capital to resume a normal life.

coronavirus hungary
Read alsoCoronavirus – Further 11 patients die, 2,863 registered as infected

The easing of restrictions will take place gradually and according to a strict timetable, he said, noting that the government is closely following experiences in Austria and the Czech Republic as guidance.

Orbán insisted that new powers handed to the government by parliament did not give it special rights but allowed the cabinet to act swiftly. He said decisions would be made every two weeks during which the effect of changes could be assessed.

Addressing international criticism of the government in relation to its enhanced powers during the state of emergency, Orbán said he had been certain that once it became clear that the outbreak of the virus could not be contained, “proposals from financial speculators” for crisis financing would be forthcoming, and the very beneficiaries would be the financial investors themselves.

“I would have been highly surprised had one of the most talented sons of our country, George Soros, not appeared among these investors,” he said.

He said first of all a “Soros plan” on migration had been published, and his “second plan” had been hatched in connection with the epidemic, promising huge profits for financial investors with minimal risk. Accordingly, Hungary, he said, would be attacked and accused of employing dictatorial methods as a way to neutralise Hungary’s objections to the speculators’ plan.

But a close reading of Hungary’s law by a top European Union official found nothing objectionable from the point of view of EU law and traditions, he said, adding that apologies to Hungary should have been streaming in but weren’t.

Orbán said the bridge to the country’s liberals was “Soros’s network”. Liberals, he said, “clutch the umbilical cord that George Soros pumps life fluids into”.

Commenting on the economic situation, he said the picture was “not encouraging”. As was the case in the aftermath of the 2008-2009 economic crisis, however, jobs were now the most important consideration, he said, adding that as many jobs would be created as were destroyed by the virus.

The prime minister noted that jobless benefits lasted for 3 months. He conceded that income subsidies were not sufficient to make a living on. But the government, he added, offered paid training and public works. And state-owned companies would be able to increase headcount for certain kinds of jobs, he said.

Addressing the issue of a statement by Romania’s president, Klaus Iohannis, who accused the opposition Social Democrats of “handing Transylvania to the Hungarians”, Orbán said Iohannis had always struck him as a respectable man who stood by his principles, “so Hungary respects Romania and its president”.

But at the same time, he said he had observed developments there with consternation, since “we did not hear such statements from Romania even during the worst anti-democratic, turbulent periods”.

He said he would adopt a wait-and-see stance for the time being, adding that Hungary was ready to “put the gloves on” if necessary. But for now it was unclear whether the president’s remark was a provocation, an “accident”, or the first salvo as part of a longer-term Romanian national strategy.

Hungary in the meantime will strive for good neighbourly relations, he said.

Coronavirus – Hungarian doctor outraged about salary

coronavirus nurse

Hungarian healthcare workers are working day and night to help the arriving patients diagnosed with the coronavirus. Nowadays, they are the true heroes helping the country to stop the epidemic as soon as possible. Although the government aims to give every necessary support, one of them was outraged by the sight of the arriving salary receipt.

444.hu reported in an interview that a Hungarian pulmonologist works in the front line at a Western-Hungarian hospital and sees coronavirus-patients day by day from morning till the evening. The doctor deals with patients who do not need intense care. Reportedly, the hospital does not have many new patients, and an increase has not been seen in the statistics for long.

“The county is infected, but surprisingly many positive patients do not need intense care. We also have patients who have recovered but were in a severe condition.” – said the doctor.

The doctor does bronchoscopy on every arriving patient. Due to the high risk of getting infected from this procedure, the doctor is provided with FFP2 and FFP3 protecting gear but uses a mask for one straight week because there is not enough. One mask can be used for only eight hours and no longer. The doctor got the protecting glasses and pressure suit from his own purchase.

Hungary, invention, glasses, coronavirus

“My department ordered masks from Aliexpress to provide enough for the nurses.”

The doctor reported that it is merely an overstatement that the government took care of the necessary protecting gear for healthcare workers. Doctors at the hospital emphasised many times that wearing the same suit over and over again is extremely dangerous despite using disinfectants on them every day more than once. The doctors do not take care of only coronavirus-patients, but others who do not have the infection.

“I am not infected. Last week the testing of doctors started at the hospital. I am not afraid of getting infected or doing risky tasks, and I do not have any chronic disease. These are the people most frequently infected, but we have seen a perfectly healthy 40-year-old patient fighting with the virus.”

After the emergency measures were introduced, Hungarian healthcare workers were forbidden to take up a second job. The doctor and many others at the hospital receive their salaries from the state but also work as practitioners. Other doctors worked at another hospital but now do not have the opportunity.

The doctor received 180,000 HUF (500 EUR) salary for March without the financial support the government promised for healthcare workers and doctors do not know when it will arrive and how.

The interviewed Hungarian doctor added that the hospital works in a good and calm environment as the chaos at the beginning of the epidemic disappeared. Because of the Chinese and French experience, Hungarian doctors “know” the virus more and aware of even the smallest symptoms.
