Get ready to bundle up, as temperatures in Hungary will drop below zero this Thursday, marking the official start of a winter chill come Friday. But the big question remains: will we see the first snowfall?
“Brace yourself for the frosty commute – coat, hat, scarf – as most parts of the country dip below freezing. While the day promises a sunny turnaround, persistent clouds may linger in the north-east,” warns the National Meteorological Service.
Expect a massive temperature drop, with many places feeling 8 to 10 degrees Celsius colder than the previous day.
Hold off on the umbrella for now, as precipitation is not yet on the horizon. However, keep an eye out for spirited winds in the orange-highlighted areas. It’s official now: winter has arrived. The temperature dropped below zero in many parts of Hungary, and in some locations, including Budapest, there was even snow. The temperature could dip below -10 degrees Celsius this week! Here is what to expect.
Winter is coming to Hungary
Portfolio writes that this week will start mildly, with only lighter airwaves arriving in the country. The weather will be warmer than in previous years, but it will be spoiled by rain. On Wednesday, the weather takes a big turn as dry air will arrive from the north. Luckily, the strong, sometimes gusty northerly wind will ease by Thursday. However, frosts are expected, and temperatures in the frosty areas will plummet as low as -10 degrees Celsius. From Friday, temperatures will moderately rise, but we can expect mostly cloudy and gloomy days in Hungary.
White Christmas
According to Hungarian traditional beliefs, if it snows on Elisabeth’s Day, the 19th of November, it will also snow on Christmas day. You can read about other peculiar Hungarian superstitions HERE. In the past, this day also marked the deadline for completing all agricultural work, such as sowing winter wheat and moving animals into the barn. Since it snowed on Elisabeth’s Day, now there’s hope for a white Christmas.
Snow in Budapest
While snow in Hungary is expected with the onset of winter, Budapest enjoyed an unusually long Indian summer this autumn. Even two weeks ago, we had plenty of sunshine, and thoughts of winter coats remained tucked away. However, 24.hu has reported that it was snowing in Normafa, Budapest last Sunday. It was a light snowfall, but harsher weather was on its way. Expect frost and snow in the country, especially in the northern counties. If you happen to be in Budapest, and you are looking for festive activities, make sure to visit the astonishing Christmas fairs! Read more HERE.
Snowy mountains
Index writes that the lowest temperature last Sunday was recorded in Zabar, where it reached -5.3 degrees Celsius in the morning. Heavier snowfall occurred in the Bakony region compared to Budapest due to the arrival of a lighter air mass. The Nagy-hideg Mountain provided the most spectacular view, with snow falling in large flakes.
The Mátra mountain range also turned white by the snowfall:
Snow arrived in Hungary – VIDEO, PHOTOS
We wrote yesterday that this winter’s first snow might arrive in Hungary. And the meteorologists were right. There was an intensive snowfall in the upper regions of some mountains in Hungary. Meanwhile, the Lake Balaton region was hit by hail. We can say that Hungary’s weather was diverse.
According to idokep.hu, a Hungarian meteorology news website, Kékestető, Hungary’s highest peak (1014m), saw the first snowfall this winter in Hungary. The frozen precipitation arrived on Saturday afternoon and lasted until the evening. Norbi Demecs, a local tour guide, was on the hill and took some photos of the snow and the snowfall. Here they are:
Today morning’s photos of the Kékestető:
And here are two photos from yesterday evening, taken around 5 pm:

Unfortunately, yesterday’s snow melted quickly. According to Időkép, today will be sunny on Kékes. In the afternoon, the temperature will be between 7-13 °C.
However, in some places, snow remained. HERE is the webcam of the Bánkút Ski Centre, where a thin layer of snow remained.
Based on the weather forecast of the Hungarian Meteorological Services, frost will arrive in Hungary this evening. On the Southern and Southwestern parts of the country, it will be sunny, while in the Northeast, clouds will disappear. There will be no precipitation today, but the winds might become strong. Aurora borealis in Hungary: breathtaking videos and pictures were taken
On Sunday evening, the aurora graced the skies of Hungary again. This marked the 10th occurrence of this dazzling celestial phenomenon in the country this year, with the latest occurrence being the most spectacular and powerful, according to Időkép.
Last night saw clear skies with only a scattering of clouds, so the extraordinary spectacle was visible to the naked eye across much of the country. The Időkép cameras recorded the beginning of the light show around 5.30 pm, but its true splendour unfolded after dark. The latest appearance of the aurora in Hungary was unique in the sense that this time it could be observed in the southern regions, including Pécs.
Perhaps the most breathtaking views were witnessed at Lake Balaton, where the magnificent pink display was reflected on the lake’s surface.
The aurora was visible in our country due to heightened geomagnetic activity on Earth, registering a significant 7 on the KP index, which ranges from 0 to 9.

Huge heat record could be broken in Hungary on Friday
Despite a recent cooling spell in Hungary, summer is expected to make a swift return, possibly with another record-breaking heatwave.
No precipitation is expected in most parts of Hungary on Friday. The dry weather in most regions will be accompanied by plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. In the southern areas, temperatures could reach up to 30 degrees.
A warm air mass of African origin will arrive with strong, in some parts of the Transdanubian region gusty, southerly winds, As a result, we should brace ourselves for temperatures ranging from 21 to 24 degrees in the north-northeast and 25 to 30 degrees in other areas during the afternoon, as reported by 24.hu.
It was very hot in Budapest: scientists shocked
Budapest recorded its hottest day on Friday since records began, the National Meteorological Service said on Saturday.
The mercury dropped to only 17.3 C. at dawn on Friday at János Hill, while the previous high was 16.4 C., recorded in 1966.
The maximum temperature of 26.9 C. measured on Friday was recorded in Pestszentlőrinc and Újpest, hotter than 26.4 C. witnessed in central Budapest in 2014, the meteorological service said on its website.

Summer is over, Hungary has issued a warning!
A cold front is moving across Hungary, causing showers and thunderstorms across the country.
According to the National Metrological Service, thunderstorms will first occur in the eastern half of Hungary today. Up to 35-50 mm of precipitation may fall in a short time. In some areas, even precipitation of more than 80 mm is possible. This could lead to localised flash floods.
Therefore, the National Meteorological Service has issued a first-level warning for the whole country due to the risk of thunderstorms, and a second-level warning is in force in several eastern counties due to cloudbursts, 24.hu reports.
In addition to rain, strong gusty wind gusts are possible.
Despite the arrival of September, summer weather is here to stay in Hungary
Astronomically, autumn arrived in Hungary on 1 September. But it seems hot summer weather is here to stay in Hungary, extending the beach and festival season for the following days.
According to 24.hu, the so-called Indian summer will be long and hot in Hungary this year. That follows stormy, rainy and cold July and August weeks, during which some beaches even had to close. However, the weather will make it back to us during September thanks to an extended Anticyclone zone bringing warmth from the South and baulking Western convections to rule the Carpathian Basin.
Meteorologist László Molnár said that a cold front will bring some change tomorrow, but by the end of the week, the extraordinarily warm summer temps will return. East Hungary will be the hottest today with 34-35 °C. That will probably break the historic record. In West Hungary, 27-28 °C will remain today.
