Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air is offering cheap, discounted tickets to the UK today. Don’t miss it: the airline’s offer valid for one day only!

Just like elsewhere, the low-cost airlines are unbeatable for this destination, with British Airways flying to England at a significantly higher price. However, it is important to know that it’s only the base fares that are cheap: if you want to take check-in luggage with you, the ticket will obviously be more expensive, Economx writes.

Cheap Wizz Air flights to London

Wizz Air is reducing its fares by 15% on Thursday compared to the original prices. The discounted fares are valid for one day only, according to their website, and apply to flights to the UK between May and July.

If you’re planning a shorter trip to the UK capital, you can fly for a couple thousand forints with Wizz Discount Club membership. The plane takes off early in the morning on 15 May, and you can return to Budapest for just a bit higher price with a morning departure on 16 May.

It’s worth bearing in mind that Wizz Air flies to Luton, which is nearly 50 kilometres from the city centre. You can get in for around GBP 5 to 10 with shuttle buses running every 35 minutes during the day.

In June, a similar quick getaway costs a bit more: with almost the same parameters, the outward fare is HUF 9,200 (EUR 23.4) for a 12 June departure, HUF 5,700 (EUR 14.5) with Wizz discount, and the return fare is HUF 17,000 (EUR 43.2) for a 13 June departure at the normal price, HUF 14,000 (EUR 35.6) with Wizz discount.

Be very careful, however, because if you take checked baggage with you or buy cabin and on-board baggage in addition to the ticket price, the price can quickly go up a lot.

BREAKING: Another flight cancelled at Budapest Airport, here is Wizz Air’s announcement about Israel flights

Budapest Airport cancelled flight airspace fee

Restrictions at Dubai International Airport, the world’s second busiest hub, are impacting flights from Budapest Airport. Meanwhile, airlines have suspended flights to the Middle Eastern country following an Iranian drone attack against Israel. Here’s Wizz Air’s surprising announcement regarding the issue.

Flight from Budapest Airport cancelled

According to turizmus.com, a Hungarian travel news outlet, the Flydubai airline has cancelled its flight from Budapest Airport to Dubai due to extreme weather conditions. Specifically, today’s FZ1405 / FZ1406 DXB-BUD-DXB flight is affected. Passengers will receive refunds for their tickets and have the option to rebook.

Travellers at the airport are advised to contact the crew for updates on the situation. Dubai International Airport, the world’s second busiest, was closed yesterday due to an unprecedented amount of rainfall. Reports suggest that the total annual precipitation for Dubai fell within a single day, leading to chaotic scenes where planes appeared to navigate runways like boats. Here is a video:

Airlines cancel Israel flights one after the other

Recently, EasyJet decided to cancel all flights to Tel Aviv for the next six months due to missile and drone attacks launched by Iran last Saturday. The first EasyJet flight to Israel is scheduled for 27 October. Passengers have the option to receive refunds or rebook their tickets.

Multiple airlines suspended services to Israel and other Middle Eastern destinations on Saturday but reopened routes by Tuesday. Some airlines have rerouted flights to avoid Iranian and Israeli airspace. Virgin Atlantic announced its decision not to fly over Iraq, Iran or Israel. The Lufthansa group and Delta have suspended flights to Beirut, while British Airways continues its operations in Israel, as reported by turizmus.com.

Surprising decision of Wizz Air

Wizz Air, the Hungarian budget airline, has made a surprising decision regarding the situation. Having resumed service to Tel Aviv from Budapest in March, Wizz Air faced questions about its stance amidst evolving security concerns. The Guardian reported potential changes, prompting inquiries to the company by index.hu. Wizz Air confirmed the cancellation of its 14 and 15 April flights but resumed operations on 16 April following careful consideration of all available information.

Wizz Air has decided to continue operating flights according to the regular schedule, with no further cancellations planned. Such a decision is only conceivable if there is a significant change in the security situation in Israel.

Unprecedented Iranian attack against Israel

Iran launched an unprecedented attack on Israel with hundreds of missiles and drones on 13 April. Israeli defence forces claim to have destroyed 99% of the attacking devices. The attack has drawn condemnation from most world leaders.

Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, reiterated his government’s support for Israel in response to the attack.

Terror threat level heightened in Hungary?

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán convened the Defence Council on Sunday, leading to speculation about a potential increase in Hungary’s terrorism threat level. Magyar Nemzet, a government-close news outlet, reported on the purported elevation. Later, the counter-terrorism force TEK clarified that the government did not raise the terror threat level in Hungary. “Hungary’s terror threat level has remained at 3 since 2016, unaffected by the Defence Council meeting on Sunday,” TEK declared.

Nonetheless, TEK admitted that the police tightened security measures at diplomatic missions, public administration institutions and border checkpoints, while reassuring the public of no imminent terrorist threat to Hungary’s safety.

Istanbul is now available from two Hungarian cities with direct Wizz Air flights

Istanbul wizz air türkiye

Wizz Air has launched its first flight between Debrecen and Istanbul.

Istanbul is the second city in Türkiye to be directly accessible from Debrecen, after Antalya. Spanning two continents, Istanbul is a unique fusion of East and West that will fascinate all visitors. Its cultural diversity, unique atmosphere, and dazzling architecture give the city a unique charm. Türkiye’s economic, cultural, and artistic center has many exciting sights and attractions. The evocative mosques, palaces, and bazaars of the past, combined with the vibrant mix of the modern metropolis, make for an unforgettable trip.

“Once again, we have reached another milestone in the airport’s life, as we welcome the launch of a new destination. We are confident of the success of the Istanbul flight, with the first flight already operating at close to 90% load factor. We are committed to making more flights available in the future to serve the travel needs of Debrecen and the region,” said Tamás Király, Managing Director of Debrecen International Airport Ltd.

“This flight development is essential from both a tourism and an economic point of view. It will provide access to the East via Istanbul Airport to any point in the world, but it will also make Debrecen a destination for tourists from all over the world. This, in turn, will enhance the quality of services in Debrecen and thus generate additional revenue for Debrecen businesses.

Due to the growing number of passengers, the airport’s improvements have come to the forefront, primarily for the comfort of passengers: we are making enhancements worth nearly HUF 600 million by installing new passenger security equipment and expanding the terminal, ” said Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen.

“Our routes to Türkiye are prevalent, so it is a great pleasure to launch another direct flight to Istanbul, this time from Debrecen. Together with our new flight, we now fly four different routes from Hungary to Türkiye, which shows our commitment to strengthening economic and tourism relations between the two countries. We look forward to welcoming as many passengers as possible on our flights between Debrecen and Istanbul said Zsuzsa Trubek, Communications Manager of Wizz Air.

As we wrote yesterday, new planes will serve Wizz Air passengers in these European cities, details HERE.

Also, we wrote a week ago, that Wizz Air moves its headquarters to a landmark office in Budapest.

Exciting: New planes will serve Wizz Air passengers in these European cities

The Hungarian budget airline is grappling with issues surrounding the Pratt & Whitney engines powering its Airbus A320neo fleet. However, a Ukrainian carrier appears to be helping the struggling Hungarian carrier, potentially averting a disadvantaged position in the turbulent market.

According to airportal.hu, Wizz Air is set to lease three Boeing 737 aircraft, complete with crew, until next March to service multiple routes for its passengers. The lessor, Ukrainian airline Sky Up Airlines, has been operating under Maltese permissions since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Leasing the new planes will cost Wizz Air an arm and a leg

Operating under a wet-lease/ACMI leasing arrangement (covering aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance), the contract spans from 1st April to 31st March of the following year. Two of the aircraft will be stationed at the Bucharest-Otopeni base, with the third stationed at Warsaw-Chopin.

Previously, we reported on Wizz Air’s grounding of 20% of its fleet due to issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, with an average maintenance duration of 300 days. Wizz Air has announced its expectation to receive 30 new Airbus A321neo aircraft by 31st March and has extended the leasing agreements for 13 other aircraft. Additionally, three more aircraft will be leased under a dry-lease arrangement (excluding crew). Despite these efforts, the airline has had to suspend several Romanian routes due to capacity constraints.

ACMI leasing is the most expensive option in the market, yet Wizz Air anticipates compensation for the damage sustained by the Pratt & Whitney engines.

Green fuel until 2030

According to airportal.hu, Wizz Air has outlined plans to operate 10% of its flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by the end of the decade. Partnering in this endeavour is British company Firefly, which has received a £5 million investment for biofuel development.

Based on the company’s announcement, their carbon dioxide emissions were 6.8% lower in 2023 compared to 2022.

Currently, Wizz Air operates 207 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, servicing 60.3 million passengers from January to December 2023.

Wizz Air moves its headquarters to a landmark office in Budapest

Millennium Towers Wizz Air Budapest Hungary

The ultra-low-cost airline Wizz Air has relocated its headquarters to the Millennium City Center office park in Budapest. The company secured an 8,000 sqm of office space in a landmark office deal. The lease agreement was concluded for the long term with very flexible conditions. Newmark VLK Hungary provided tenant representation to execute this transaction.

In a landmark lease transaction, Wizz Air moved its staff to the Millennium Tower, which is part of Millennium City Center, a premium office park by the Danube in Budapest. The airline has set up its new headquarters by renting out the entire South Tower, which has state-of-the-art interiors and services to improve employee comfort. The company has a separate entrance and reception, a dedicated modern dining and catering area, and a unit of a leading café chain, while a modern fitness center is also available in the area.

“We tried to find a vibrant and rapidly developing location for the client. Millennium Tower is an excellent property as a lot of services surrounds it, and the building itself offers many amenities. It already functioned as a company headquarters, so a significant part of the fit-out could be retained, and a more cost-effective approach could be used to arrange the final interior space, which is an important aspect for a tenant which is a low-cost airline,” said Valter Kalaus, managing director of the real estate consulting firm, Newmark VLK Hungary which spearheaded the transaction, representing the tenant.

He added that only a few new projects have been launched in the Budapest office market over the past three years, most of the contracts are extensions, and there are very few suitable office buildings among those already operating where such a large company headquarters can be established according to the modern standards and requirements. In addition, the flexibility of the lessor has extended to the point that it can also provide additional space for the future expansion of the airline should there be a demand for it.

“We are delighted to be moving our corporate headquarters to an office building with such outstanding facilities. The new premises will give Wizz Air, Europe’s fastest-growing airline, a central hub to foster collaboration, community, and innovation to strengthen its low-fare leadership position. I am sure that the modern environment and easily -accessible downtown location will be appreciated not only by our existing and new colleagues but also by our partners while serving our continuously growing and expanding airline for many years to come.”

– said Ian Malin, Chief Financial Officer of Wizz Air.

5 supercheap but mesmerizing destinations from Budapest by plane

budapest airport destinations

Here are five astonishing destinations from Budapest Airport for less than EUR 10 by okosutas.hu, a Hungarian travel news media outlet.

Even though inflation made plane ticket prices increase considerably in the last few years, there are still favourable offers from Budapest Airport to mesmerising destinations. According to okosutas.hu, their list is based on subjective factors. Furthermore, the prices below are available for Wizz Discount Club members, while Ryanair’s starting price is EUR 15-17  from Budapest.

1. Milan

Competition results in cheaper prices, and the Budapest-Milan flight is a perfect example. When Ryanair appeared on the route, Wizz Air went below EUR 10. Moreover, such cheap flights are available in spring and summer alike. The airport hub of Milan is a perfect choice to continue your journey anywhere in Europe or the world.

2. Stockholm

Wizz Air and Ryanair are also present on this route, and they both moved their target airport from Nyköping (Skavsta) to the main airport, Arlanda. Since there are many flights, prices must remain low. Thus, you can find some tickets for EUR 10 each month. The last one is currently for 1 June. EUR 15-20 tickets are much more common.

3. London

You can travel to Luton for EUR 10 and Gatwick for EUR 15 in May. Afterwards, plane tickets get more expensive. The lowest price is EUR 15-20. If you travel from Vienna to Gatwick, you may also bump into EUR 10 tickets.

4. Tirana (Albania)

Albania is worth a try, okosutas.hu believes. Prices fell after Ryanair announced they would launch flights from Budapest to the Albanian capital like Wizz Air.

5. Rome

You may book tickets for only EUR 10 for travels between May and August, and there will be more in the summer, okosutas.hu wrote.

In the EUR 15-20 price category, there are many more available flights to more than 30 destinations. Prices are low even for flights in early June. A jump is in mid-June, and summer flights are expensive. In the next few weeks, okosutas.hu expects a price decrease in that category, too.

Discover a hidden gem: Wizz Air relaunches flights to the Eastern European capital

Moldova

Wizz Air has announced that it has resumed flights between Budapest and Chisinau, with the decision effective from April.

Chișinău, located on the banks of the Bîc River, is one of the region’s key centers and one of the greenest cities on the continent. The many forests, parks, zoos, and botanical gardens are too numerous to take the time to explore. Still, the architectural jewels, cathedrals, churches, and cultural events such as theatre and ballet performances make for a great program.

From April, travelers will be able to visit the capital of Moldova twice a week. This new flight is part of the more than 70 WIZZ flights available from Budapest this summer.

What happened to Wizz Air? Hungarian airline changes name

wizz air

The Hungarian low-cost airline, Wizz Air, has renamed itself – well, at least for a Facebook post. For 1 April.

“You asked, we listened!” – Wizz says in their 1 April Facebook post. They then go on to say that they’ve been preparing for months to finally introduce a new era…

Rizz Air!

The word “rizz” (alluring, attractive, charming) was recommended earlier by several of their commenters, which was the basis for the current joke. Rizz is short for “charisma,” and it means an ability to charm and woo a person.

Wizz Air – Rizz Air?

Seems like Wizz is trying to charm people into travelling with them; however, it will not be easy in the coming period:

Wizz Air to lose more than 20% of its planes due to faulty engines, the worst is still ahead

Wizz Air Pratt & Whittney engine failure

As we reported multiple times, there are significant problems with the Airbus A320 engines. Therefore, maintenance is compulsory, but that takes months during which planes cannot fly. Since Wizz Air bought lots of Airbus A320s, the maintenance affects its fleet significantly. According to Világgazdaság, they may lose even 20% of their planes temporarily, and the worst is still ahead.

Based on their article, Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said that the number of Wizz planes on the ground will peak in 6-12 months. That is because the producer cannot keep up with the outstanding number of engines that need adjustment.

József Váradi Wizz Air CEO Hungary
Photo: FB/Budflyer

RTX recalled more than 3,000 Pratt & Whitney engines after it became apparent that metal powder contaminated them. The powder causes premature failures in the motors. Mr Váradi said in a Thursday interview that approximately 20% of the Wizz Air planes are on the ground due to measurements and maintenance. RTX’s prognosis is about a 300-day-long waiting time, Világgazdaság wrote.

In the next few years, many Airbus SE A320 planes will have to be on the ground due to the examinations and reparations. However, even F-35 fighters fly with Pratt & Whitney motors.

Wizz Air engine
Photo: FB/Wizz Air

Wizz Air will not be able to expand its network this summer

Based on an RTX statement, they expect to repair most of the motors in Q2 2024, but Mr Váradi believes that was only a desire since we are already at the end of Q1 this year. The company promised to increase its capacity concerning production and reparation to reduce the waiting time. Furthermore, regulatory deadlines are more favourable than previously expected. As a result, in autumn, the number of planes forced to the ground due to engine problems will probably be lower than the calculated 650.

Váradi said they would not lose more than 20% of their planes because of the engine maintenance. The remaining aircraft will be enough to provide the planned service for the summer season. However, they will not be able to raise capacities this summer. Even so, they try to purchase planes, prolong leasing contracts and buy new aircraft.

Váradi said Wizz Air had to cease 13% and 7% due to the war in Ukraine and Israel. However, the low-cost airline is profitable. The airline does not plan to buy another airline. Instead, they would like to expand their network by buying airport places.

Mesmerizing midnight views: Aerial photos of Lake Balaton’s enchanting nights

Lake balaton

Stunning aerial shots of Lake Balaton at night, bathed in a flood of light. Gábor Kaleszdorfer, a pilot of the Wizz Air airline, took these captivating snaps.

According to likebalaton.hu, pilot Gábor Kaleszdorfer revealed that he captured the mesmerising scenes during a flight from Romania to London, using his mobile phone from an altitude of approximately 10-12,000 metres.

“The pictures were taken with a Google Pixel 7 phone with a gyroscope. This means there is no vibration or blurring. And the camera also amplifies the nocturnal light,” explained Gábor Kaleszdorfer, who added that it always cheers him up to see the beauty of the Hungarian sea.

The pilot shot the photos last October and sent them to his father, who shared them on social media, prompting their viral spread.

“When we see a space photograph, what do we first look for in Hungary? Lake Balaton. Everyone recognises it, and everyone’s heart leaps when they see the lake from above,”

the pilot said. The photographs show how Lake Balaton is seamlessly integrated into its surroundings. In recent years, rampant mega-investments have often resulted in the destruction of natural habitats, taking a toll not only on the immediate vicinity of the lake but also on nearby settlements.

Outstanding development: Wizz Air restarts flight to the Middle-East

Wizz Air crew Hungarian airline

Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost airline, will restart its flight between Debrecen, Hungary’s second biggest city.

According to dehir.hu, a local news outlet, Wizz Air will fly to the Israeli destination, Tel-Aviv, from Debrecen. Debrecen hosts a respected university, thousands of foreigners, BMW’s new manufacturing plant, R+D facilities, and the Israeli Teva Pharmaceuticals with Tel Aviv in Israel.

The first plane will take off on 18 June from the runway of the Debrecen International Airport, Zsuzsa Trubek, the communications manager of the budget airline, told dehir.hu.

Wizz Air will connect Debrecen with Tel Aviv

Scheduled flights between Debrecen and Tel Aviv began to carry passengers in 2017 but were suspended several times. First, that happened after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and the last time the airline cancelled its Tel Aviv flights was due to the war in Gaza.

Debrecen hosts one of Israel’s “flagship” companies, Teva Pharmaceuticals. Therefore, demand is huge for a regular flight between the city and Tel Aviv.

Interestingly, Wizz Air restarted its Budapest-Tel Aviv flight in March, but they postponed doing so in the case of Debrecen.

Trubek highlighted that they would not change the departure date of the first plane to Tel Aviv: it will happen on 18 June, and flights will commute between the two cities twice a week.

According to dehir.hu, Debrecen’s tourism sector will benefit from the new service since the number of guests from Israel has risen significantly in the past few years. For example, it happened several times that more than 100 guests checked in to the city’s famous Aquaticum Hotel, all arriving on the same plane.

Wizz Air and Lufthansa fly from Debrecen to multiple destinations

The last time Wizz Air launched a new flight from Debrecen was last December, and the destination was Rome. We detailed that HERE.

According to Trubek, the new flight was successful. The trend is different in Debrecen than in Budapest. People there book their flights in advance, and it happens only rarely that passengers buy last-minute tickets.

Wizz Air’s first flight to Istanbul will take off a month later. The airline’s communications manager said demand is moderate for the spring season. But many people already booked their summer flights to the Turkish metropolis.

Wizz Air commutes to London, Larnaca (Cyprus), Eindhoven from Debrecen. Furthermore, you can travel to Munich from Debrecen with Lufthansa. That should not be surprising since BMW is to move its new European plant to the Hungarian city.

Wizz Air will relaunch its seasonal flights from Debrecen to Antala, Corfu and Burgas this summer. The flights will carry passengers until autumn. The good news is that the first Burgas flight will take off in April instead of May.

Scary footage: Wizz Air pilot makes unexpected manoeuvre due to extreme wind

Wizz Air plane airspace fee

A Wizz Air pilot was forced to abort his landing at Madeira airport, resulting in a spectacular go-around.

Spectacular footage has been published by Madeira Airport Spotting, a site specialising in capturing the highlights of Madeira Airport. The video shows a Wizz Air flight attempting to land on the runway, but presumably having to make a go-around due to wind. The go-around involves the pilot aborting the landing, applying throttle, and turning the plane around as it climbs back into the air, Világgazdaság explains.

The footage shows a Wizz Air Airbus A321NX aircraft attempting to land gently, then the aircraft suddenly starts to sway, the pilot accelerates and the go-around begins. In such situations, the reaction time of the pilot is important and if he sees fit to go-around, he has every right to do so.

Wizz Air pilot’s go-around

A go-around is not an emergency in itself, but rather a prevention of one, Világgazdaság writes.

Superb news: Hungarian Wizz Air saves passengers after Ryanair’s announced departure!

Wizz Air passengers All You Can Fly

The Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air said it would offer a discounted rebooking option for the Ryanair passengers stuck in Jordan. The special, so-called rescue tickets will cost HUF 12,390 (EUR 30), and you may travel to Budapest, Rome or Milan with them.

Ryanair announced before that they would not fly between Amman and Budapest because the war was too close. The Irish low-cost airline has been trying to keep the route up but has only been managing to fill the planes flying to Jordan with great difficulty and cheap tickets. We detailed the causes of their decision in THIS article.

Therefore, the Irish low-cost’s main rival, the Hungarian Wizz Air, decided to enter the market and help people stuck in Jordan to get out. The Hungarian low-cost carrier offers direct flights between Amman and Budapest, Milan or Vienna. The decision shows the airline’s commitment towards the European and Middle Eastern passengers, their statement cleared.

According to Wizz Air, the passengers have time until 30 April to buy their tickets for their Amman rescue planes. The budget airline created a subsidiary website for that – click HERE to reach it.

Wizz Air and Ryanair CEOs are not friends

Based on index.hu, passengers may do their rebooking with the six-digit code they got from Ryanair. Wizz’s first flight landed in Jordan in 2013, and they would like to strengthen their presence with this decision. They would like to offer service to those locals whose holiday was ruined by Ryanair’s decision. Wizz Air is offering seven routes from the Middle Eastern state.

József Váradi Wizz Air CEO Hungary
Wizz CEO József Váradi. Photo: FB/Budflyer

We wrote in THIS article that Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said in an interview that his Ryanair counterpart, Michael O’Leary probably was “under the influence of drugs” when he said Ryanair was Hungary’s nr1 airline. Mr Váradi said Ryanair’s market share is only 26%, while Wizz Air’s is 38%. He also said that Wizz Air is Hungary’s flag carrier.

The incident shows that the two airlines are competing hard for the passengers in the European market, and Wizz Air’s Jordan move may mean they will have better positions in a post-war Jordan than Ryanair.

Wizz Air surprises passengers with amazing spring price reduction

József Váradi Wizz Air CEO Hungary All You Can Fly

The Hungarian low-cost airline announced six new flights to European destinations from Budapest this week. Now, it is presenting a spring discount concerning luggage, seat selection, and Wizz Priority.

According to utazomajom.hu, a Hungarian travel news outlet, Wizz Air set checked-in baggage cost to EUR 9, the lowest price ever. In addition, passengers who travel before 26 March can buy additional services like seat selection and Wizz Priority for a reduced price.

The Hungarian low-cost airline planned the offer to last only 1-2 days. However, it became so popular that they chose to prolong it.

Zsuzsa Trubek, the communications manager of Wizz Air, said they would like to make flying affordable for more people.

Therefore, the special offer will last for one month. Moreover, the action is available for passengers who already have a ticket for a journey between 1 and 26 March. For example, they can add checked-in baggage for only EUR 9. Unfortunately, passengers who already settled their baggage bill and travel in the given period cannot reduce their costs with this offer.

The cheaper services included in the special offer are available via the airline’s website and app.

Since Wizz Air’s pricing system is dynamic concerning baggage, the costs may skyrocket in the summer.

Wizz Air receives bomb threat in Belgrade

Wizz Air’s Airbus A320 aircraft received an anonymous threat after it started take-off preparations on the runway. As a result, the plane was evacuated via the emergency slides. The airline said, “the aircraft immediately returned to a remote location at Belgrade Airport where all passengers were safely evacuated. Passengers have been transferred to the terminal and provided with refreshments. The authorities are undertaking necessary checks in line with protocol. The safety of passengers and crew is of Wizz Air’s utmost priority”.

Serbian police and emergency services scanned the aircraft but found nothing.

Because of the bomb threat, Belgrade Airport was closed for several hours.

Below are two videos of the evacuation:

BREAKING: Hungarian Wizz Air launches six new flights from Budapest! – UPDATED

Wizz Air plane Ukraine All You Can Fly

Based on information shared by a Hungarian air travel news portal Facebook page, Wizz Air is set to launch six new flight routes from Budapest to various European destinations. Here’s what we already know about this exciting announcement.

According to Budflyer, Wizz Air is gearing up to start operations on these new routes starting from June, connecting Budapest to several European cities.

To Yerevan, Armenia, Wizz Air will operate three flights per week, with the first flight scheduled for 17th June. Ticket prices will start from EUR 41.4, as reported by Pénzcentrum.

The additional destinations and their respective details are as follows:

  • Brussels, Belgium (from 19 June with five planes per week, tickets starting from EUR 41.4),
  • Brassó-Brașov, Romania (Brasov, from 18 June, three times a week, tickets starting from EUR 15),
  • Bucharest Otopeni, Romania (from 17 June every day, tickets starting from EUR 25.5),
  • Stuttgart, Germany (from 18 June, five times a week, tickets starting from EUR 25.5),
  • Valencia (from 17 June, three times a week, tickets starting from EUR 31.2).
According to the travel news Facebook page, these new flights are already available for booking through the Hungarian budget airline’s system. The announcement comes as a surprise, considering Wizz Air‘s recent focus on addressing issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, resulting in several grounded planes awaiting maintenance. We detailed these issues in our previous article HERE.

We will continue to update this article as more information regarding the expansion becomes available.

Wizz Air figures

In addition, Pénzcentrum reports that the Hungarian low-cost carrier will increase flight frequencies between Paris and Budapest leading up to and during the Olympic Games and European Championships. Daily flights between the two capitals are planned from 16th June to 30th September. They also mentioned plans to transport gold medallists on their dedicated “Gold Plane” using their newest and most modern aircraft for these events. József Váradi, Wizz Air’s CEO, announced in a morning press conference that two more planes will be arriving in Budapest this summer. Mr Váradi added that in 2023, the airline experienced a 32% growth with 60.3 million passengers.

UPDATE: Wizz Air announces frequency boosts to European destinations from June

In a recent announcement, Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost carrier, touted as Europe’s fastest-growing and most environmentally sustainable airline, disclosed its plans to enhance its service offerings. The airline revealed intentions to integrate two state-of-the-art Airbus A321neo aircraft into its Budapest fleet by June, expanding its fleet to 16 planes in Budapest and an additional aircraft at Debrecen International Airport.

This expansion marks a significant milestone for Wizz Air, catapulting it to unprecedented fleet size and consolidating its position as the foremost market leader in Hungary, boasting a 38% share.

Apart from the aforementioned six new destinations, Wizz Air will increase flight frequencies to several European destinations, including Athens, Alicante, Basel, Glasgow, Madrid, Malta, Milan, Naples, Nice, Rome, Thessaloniki and Tirana.

As a result, Wizz Air’s capacity will exceed its 2023 level by 15%, facilitating transportation for an estimated 6.67 million passengers. This milestone also positions the budget airline as Hungary’s largest employer in history, generating over 4,000 job opportunities.

UPDATE 2 – Wizz Air CEO: Ryanair CEO was ‘under the influence of drugs’

That is what József Váradi said about Michael O’Leary: he was probably under the influence of narcotics when he said a couple of days ago that the Irish low-cost airline was Hungary’s market leader. Mr Váradi told hvg.hu that their market share was 38%, clearly beating Ryanair’s 26%.

O’Leary called the leadership of Wizz Air liars and added they had no chance to compete with Ryanair in the Hungarian market.

Mr Váradi said Wizz Air is Hungary’s market leader and they are Hungary’s flag carrier.

Exciting news: Wizz Air continues Mediterranean Riviera route from Hungary

Wizz Air flight riviera paradise

Get ready for a Mediterranean getaway, but with a twist! While Budapest won’t be offering direct flights to this Turkish paradise city in the upcoming spring season, there’s a silver lining: Debrecen International Airport steps up to the plate. Here’s what you need to know.

According to okosutas.hu, your best bet for reaching Antalya, Turkey’s holiday haven on the Turkish Riviera, this spring is via a direct flight from the Eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen. Surprisingly, Budapest won’t be offering connections to Antalya during this period, a rarity considering it’s typically a hub for all airlines, including budget carriers.

Despite the recent shake-up in Wizz Air’s spring timetable (detailed in our previous article), there’s good news on the horizon: the direct flight from the “Calvinist Rome” to Antalya will not cease operation. However, the downside is that there’ll only be one weekly flight instead of the usual two.

Wizz Air flights in spring

This decision raises eyebrows, especially considering Budapest boasts Wizz Air’s largest base in Hungary, with 15 planes stationed there, compared to just one in Debrecen. Yet, for now, Wizz Air is prioritising its spring flight from the latter. But, given the airline’s penchant for schedule revisions, this situation might change over time.

Initially, Wizz Air had planned three weekly flights from Budapest to Antalya for the spring season, but those plans have been shelved. However, come summer (starting mid-June), both Budapest and Debrecen will see two weekly flights to Antalya.

So, for early birds keen on a pre-summer escape to Antalya, Debrecen is your go-to destination. Fortunately, getting to Debrecen via public transport is a breeze, with convenient train connections even from Budapest Airport’s train station (Ferihegy).

Hungarian Wizz Air receives bad news: panic over losing thousands of passengers

Wizz Air passengers Budapest Airport jet fuel

A recent survey by Which? reveals that, for the second year running, Wizz Air has earned the unenviable title of the worst airline according to British travellers. Struggling with engine failures, the company now faces the prospect of further loss of passengers following this disheartening news. Responding to the findings, the UK managing director of Wizz Air shared their perspective, which we share in this article.

The Independent has dedicated a long article to dissecting Wizz Air’s disappointing standing in the United Kingdom, delving into the insights provided by the Which? survey. In essence, the Hungarian airline finds itself at the bottom of the rankings primarily due to dissatisfaction with its customer service and perceived lack of value for money, particularly concerning short-haul flights.

Hungarian airline in trouble

Which? conducted a comprehensive survey encompassing 10,775 flights, seeking passengers’ opinions on various aspects such as customer service, value for money, seat comfort and dining options. UK travellers voiced complaints against the Hungarian budget carrier for frequent delays and poor customer service, with one passenger expressing frustration at the difficulty of communication when seeking assistance.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the airline received a mere one-star rating for customer service, translating to a dismal 44% satisfaction index, trailing behind Ryanair at 47%, Iberia at 49% and Vueling at 53%. However, Wizz Air’s underperformance extends beyond customer service, with below par ratings across other categories, including value for money, despite its positioning as a budget carrier offering competitive fares.

Meanwhile, Jet2 emerged as the frontrunner in the survey, boasting a five-star rating for customer service and an impressive 80% overall satisfaction rating.

Wizz Air strikes back

“Air fares have soared in recent years, and the bare minimum passengers should expect in return for their hard-earned cash is a reliable service, with friendly, easy-to-access customer support when they are let down”, Rory Boland, travel editor at Which, asserted.

The budget airline has contested the survey’s methodology, dismissing the sample group’s results as unrepresentative.

Marion Geoffroy, UK managing director at Wizz Air UK, countered, said “We conduct customer satisfaction surveys across our network, and hundreds of thousands of passengers have said they are satisfied with the service we provide. Our results show our customer satisfaction has improved year-on-year and is significantly higher than this report suggests”.

Geoffroy emphasised Wizz Air’s adherence to Civil Aviation Authority regulations and asserted that their performance ranks among the best in the United Kingdom.
