Hungary has a special Memorial Day that commemorates the end of the 1848 revolution annually on March 15th. The Hungarians stood up against the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy so that they could have independence from their rule and tyranny. The political reform that Hungarians fought for was known as the 12 Points.

How can you celebrate the 2023 Memorial Day of the 1848 Revolution during your trip to Hungary this March? Let’s discover how!

When you are planning how you will celebrate this upcoming Hungarian holiday, have fun with your favorite games at a casino online. Spin a slots reel, bet on one number on roulette, or try not to bust at 21 with Blackjack. Be mindful that not every bet is a guaranteed profitable win, but have fun with your casino gameplay experience!

Why is the Annual Memorial Day of the 1848 Revolution in Hungary Important?

The annual celebration of this Memorial Day in Hungary shows how the nation became independent from a tyrannical empire. Once they started their democracy in the mid-1800s, Hungary was known as the third European country to host elections for electing candidates for government offices.

Hungarians were not happy with how the power of rule from the Austrian empire was treating them. The power of humans uniting for a common purpose showing how change is possible is another great reason why the Hungarian Memorial Day is important.

Back almost 175 years ago, liberal activists and young students gathered together in Pesta to form an uprising against the Austrians. Hence, they fled to Vienna before they armed themselves with the help of Russian reinforcements to cease the uprising about a year and a half later in the late summer of 1849.

Did the 1848 Revolution Succeed?

While the revolution did not achieve fully what it set out to do, it was one of the longest-running European revolutions of its time frame. By 1867, Austria-Hungary allowed for a formal compromise to be set into law that Hungarians were able to receive some autonomy in specific respects. Hence, this meant that Austrians had their empire, culture, and government set up as Hungarians also had their own.

Eventually, the dissolution of Austria-Hungary occurred in 1918 because of a trifecta of economic distress, the effects of World War I, and failing crops that put the nation into starvation. They divided into the two separate nations of Austria and Hungary that we know today.

How to Celebrate Memorial Day in Hungary

There are many ways that you can celebrate Memorial Day in Hungary. To show Hungarian pride, natives wear green and red cockades (almost like a ribbon) that are pinned above their hearts to commemorate the day. The red and green are color symbols related to the Hungarian flag.

Visit Parliament and other local museums in Budapest during that week for free to learn more about Memorial Day history. Buda Castle hosts many family-oriented activities for the children to get in on the fun as well while learning about this important historical day.

Since it is a national holiday, national store chains and mom-and-pop shops are closed to commemorate this time. Look for local parades and speeches from political officials in the area that can also be a way you celebrate Memorial Day in Hungary.

Final Thoughts

The power of standing up for what you believe in helped Hungary to set in motion their cessation from Austria to become a nation of their own. Get ready to celebrate Memorial Day in Hungary by booking your flight to the country. Don’t forget your red and green cockade to show your Hungarian pride during this holiday!
