Like in much of the world, social media is extremely popular in Hungary. People there have many digital options to stay connected with friends, family and colleagues, and they turn to social media platforms at high rates.
The platforms that are popular in Hungary, though, are slightly different than those in some other parts of the world. In fact, Facebook is the overwhelming leader in terms of the number of users.
As of December 2022, Facebook accounted for a whopping 91.61% of the mobile traffic by Hungarians to social media sites. Let’s take a look at some more interesting statistics below.
As mentioned, Facebook is far and away the leading social media platform in Hungary. As of January 2023, there were about 6.9 million Hungarian users on Facebook. While that number is down from the 7.43 million people who had an account on the platform in March 2022, it’s still very high.
Hungarians go on the social media platform to connect with people they know to share exciting leisure activities they take part in, photos and updates of their families and to just stay in touch.
Instagram, which is owned by the same company as Facebook (Meta), is next on the list, accounting for 2.72% of all mobile traffic to social media platforms in Hungary.
As of January 2023, there were about 2.7 million Hungarian users on this social media platform. That’s down slightly from the 2.95 million as of March 2022, but still substantially high.
Pinterest is a slightly different social media platform than the two above it. The site allows people to share pictures and ideas through “boards” that they can set up under their profile. There’s a strong visual element to it, and the digital options appeals to Hungarians.
Of all mobile traffic to social media sites, 1.7% of it goes to Pinterest.
Twitter is another social media platform that’s built on sending messages with a certain character limit. It’s popular in Hungary, of course, but not as popular as in some other countries such as the United States and Japan.
In Hungary, 1.65% of traffic to social media sites via mobile devices went to Twitter.
YouTube is the most powerful and popular video sharing platform in the world. You can find everything from vlogs of people’s lives, to “How To” videos, to podcast-like comment videos, to “Top 10” of everything under the sun.
The site (owned by Google) accounted for 0.68% of all social media traffic via mobile devices in Hungary. The platform is most popular with people between the ages of 35 and 44, which accounted for 25% of the total traffic to the site.
Reddit is a forum platform where users can connect with others by sharing their thoughts, pictures, videos and more. The site is categorized into what are known as subreddits, which are essentially separate forums that are dedicated to only one topic. This helps to narrow down the content that’s in each.
In Hungary, 0.6% of all internet traffic to social media platforms via mobile devices went to Reddit as of December 2022.
People in Hungary love to visit social media platforms, and they spend a good part of their days on those sites. There are multiple social media platforms on the market, and the ones that are most popular in Hungary aren’t the same as the ones that are the most popular in some other countries.
Hungarians flock to Facebook much more than any other social media platform, which is contrary to what’s happening in some other countries – where Facebook is falling out of favor and other platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are rising in popularity.
The above statistics show where the majority of social media traffic is going in Hungary, and it’s unlikely to change significantly in the near future.

All of them did their best suppress the Covid news if it was different than the US goverment- remember the lockdown ?
Masks. Don’t you dare call it the China virus or mention the Wuhan lab. Most of people dying from Covid are vaxed. Many lives and business have been destroyed but that was ages ago.
For over 2 years they covered up the Biden family corruption, especially in Ukraine that is right next door- you wouldn’t dare mention it. The now president was point man for 8 years on Ukraine in his time as VP. I have never heard it mentioned here or any local who has clue.. the war would not have happened if trump was president and Orban said the same. What happens in the US affects the the Free world, just like Soros being the biggest money behind the left wing in the US.
Makes me sick how addicted this country is to these US tech company’s and are clueless what is going on. The biggest private medical center here is a Facebook page- you must sign up to FB and mask are still required. They are still pushing something about a Wet market in China, but you could be banned on FB for questioning.
