Time Out has ranked Europe’s best-value city break destinations, and a Hungarian city has made the list. Miskolc has secured fourth place among the continent’s most budget-friendly urban escapes, alongside destinations that have long been favourites with tourists. The ranking reflects a growing trend: international travellers are increasingly seeking affordable yet experience-rich destinations.

As prices continue to climb in Europe’s most popular tourist hotspots, one Hungarian city has unexpectedly emerged as a leading low-cost alternative. According to Time Out’s 2026 ranking, Miskolc is now Europe’s fourth best-value city break, trailing only Tirana, Sarajevo and Hull.

A compelling choice for a getaway

Miskolc has featured in Time Out’s value-for-money recommendations before, and this year is no exception. The former industrial hub once again claims fourth place, just behind Hull in England. During the socialist era, the city was one of Hungary’s most significant industrial centres, second only to Budapest in terms of population. Today, however, it is known for altogether different attractions.

The ranking highlights Miskolc’s vibrant bar scene—considered among the best outside the capital—as well as its popular monthly flea market. A modern tram line conveniently links the railway station with the city centre and the Bükk National Park, making it an ideal base for those drawn to the outdoors.

Natural beauty and renewed attractions

Time Out also singles out Lillafüred, easily accessible by local bus. This picturesque lakeside resort, along with its forest railway, ranks among the area’s most popular sights. The medieval Diósgyőr Castle is also mentioned, though it remains under long-term renovation, with results that leave something to be desired.

One of Miskolc’s enduring draws is the cave bath at Miskolctapolca. The publication notes that the renowned spa is set to reopen this summer following a major refurbishment. Nearby, the Ellipsum thermal complex offers year-round bathing, with thermal pools, water slides and even night-time sessions.

Taken together, the ranking suggests that Miskolc is no longer merely a domestic favourite. As one of Europe’s best-value cities, it is increasingly capturing the attention of international travellers.

According to Time Out, a typical one-bedroom Airbnb in Miskolc costs around EUR 55 per night. A pint of beer, meanwhile, is priced at just over 600 forints, making it one of the cheapest among the listed cities.

Tirana tops the list

Tirana takes first place in the ranking. The Albanian capital is praised as a low-cost alternative to the increasingly overcrowded tourist destinations of Greece, Spain and Italy, offering affordable accommodation alongside budget-friendly restaurants and bars.

Sarajevo ranks second. Time Out notes that Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital can be explored on a shoestring: visitors can spend hours wandering its historic streets, while local markets offer traditional dishes at modest prices.

Hull, in third place, earns its position thanks to its cultural life, historic city centre and comparatively low prices by British standards.

While Miskolc cannot quite compete with Tirana and Sarajevo on accommodation costs, it does boast the cheapest beer among the cities listed.
