A shunting locomotive derailed at Budapest’s Southern Railway Station (Déli pályaudvar) on Monday morning, disrupting several services and causing changes for passengers travelling towards Lake Balaton and Pécs.

Several trains affected after locomotive derailment

A shunting locomotive derailed in the points area of Budapest’s Déli railway station, temporarily blocking tracks 1–5, according to MÁVINFORM.

Several trains were left stranded on the affected tracks, forcing MÁV-csoport to reorganise services. As a result, some trains are only running to and from Budapest-Kelenföld, while some suburban services have been cancelled.

Passengers travelling towards Lake Balaton and Pécs should expect further changes and different train formations as the disruption continues.

Suburban trains cancelled

Among the affected suburban services are:

  • The Z30 trains to Martonvásár are not running.
  • The S40 trains to Százhalombatta are not running.

Balaton and Pécs services also affected

The Mecsek InterCity services to Pécs are currently only running between Budapest-Kelenföld and Pécs, rather than serving Déli railway station.

The disruption is also affecting several Balaton services:

The 7:35 AM Tópart InterCity (IC 842) from Déli to Nagykanizsa has been cancelled. Passengers can instead take the Balaton InterCity (IC 862) one hour later. After the train arrives in Balatonszentgyörgy, a replacement bus will continue to Nagykanizsa.

A replacement bus will also leave Balatonszentgyörgy at 10:01 AM, following the original train’s departure time, and will stop at intermediate stations.

The 9:05 AM fast train to Tapolca (9792) only runs from Budapest-Kelenföld and is expected to depart with a 15–20-minute delay. Passengers can travel from Déli to Kelenföld on the 9:10 AM Z30 train to Székesfehérvár, with a connection provided.

Meanwhile, the 5:51 AM fast train from Tapolca to Déli (9709) will terminate at Budapest-Kelenföld instead of continuing to the Southern Railway Station.

Train tickets accepted on several Budapest public transport services

Passengers affected by the disruption can use their valid train tickets on several BKK services until the disruption is resolved. These include:

  • M2 metro between Déli railway station and Keleti railway station
  • The entire M4 metro line
  • Bus routes 140, 140A and 139, recommended for passengers travelling between Déli and Kelenföld
  • Tram routes 56, 56A, 17 and 61 towards Móricz Zsigmond körtér
  • The entire length of tram routes 19 and 49

Passengers travelling from Budapest towards Lake Balaton or Pécs are advised to check their train before setting off, as further changes may be introduced while railway staff reorganise traffic at Déli railway station.
