Budapest’s public transport operator, Budapest Transport Centre (BKK), has announced major transport changes, extra services and road restrictions ahead of Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final in the Hungarian capital.

According to a Wednesday statement, Budapest’s public transport network will operate with significantly increased capacity before, during and after the match as tens of thousands of football fans descend on the city.

The UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Arsenal F.C. is expected to attract around 60,000 supporters to Puskás Aréna, while many more ticketless fans are also expected to arrive in the Hungarian capital.

Metro lines and trams to run every few minutes

BKK said the M2 and M4 metro lines, as well as Tram 1, will run every 2–3 minutes during peak periods on the day of the final.

To serve the Champions Festival set up at Heroes’ Square, the historic M1 metro line will also operate more frequently for four days, aligned with the festival’s opening hours.

On Saturday alone, around 100 additional buses, trams and metro services will be deployed across the city. Direct public transport connections will also operate between Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and fan meeting points.

From Friday to Sunday, the 100E Airport Express and the 200E bus services will depart every 2–3 minutes.

Ferihegy Terminal 1 to reopen temporarily

Authorities will also reopen Ferihegy Terminal 1 for three days to help handle the increased passenger traffic.

Before the match, special 100E Airport Express buses will operate from Terminal 1 towards the city centre. After the final, airport-bound services — including the 100E and 200E — will stop at Ferihegy railway station to serve the terminal.

In another major measure, police will reserve the airport expressway exclusively for public transport vehicles between 8 AM and 5 PMm on Saturday.

Match ticket holders can travel for free

Fans holding match tickets will be allowed to use Budapest’s entire public transport network free of charge from Friday to Sunday, including the 100E Airport Express service.

BKK has urged both football supporters and Budapest residents to choose public transport, particularly the metro network, during the event.

“BKK, together with its service providers and the authorities, is fully prepared for Saturday’s Champions League final,” the transport company said in its statement.

Several areas accessible only on foot

Significant traffic restrictions will also be introduced around Puskás Aréna and at several other locations across the city. Some areas on Saturday will only be accessible on foot.

In addition to the stadium itself, key event zones will include City Park, Heroes’ Square and the MTK Sportpark on Kerepesi Road.

Police previously said that both PSG and Arsenal supporters had purchased more than 17,000 tickets each, while tens of thousands of additional fans without tickets are also expected to travel to Budapest for the final.
