Polish PM Tusk furious as Budapest considered for Putin–Zelensky–Trump peace talks

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has condemned the prospect of peace talks in Budapest involving Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, calling it a “bad idea”. He noted that Ukraine’s borders had already been guaranteed in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum — an agreement later shattered by Russia’s military aggression in 2014.

Budapest? Not everyone may remember this, but in 1994 Ukraine already got assurances of territorial integrity from the US, Russia and the UK. In Budapest. Maybe I’m superstitious, but this time I would try to find another place“, Tusk wrote in a post shared on the social media platform X.

Earlier today, reports emerged that the White House is pushing for Budapest as the venue for the next round of peace talks between Trump, Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky. Sources close to the Trump administration confirmed that the Hungarian capital is a leading contender among several potential locations.

Tusk calls for continued support for Kyiv

On Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that international leaders remain committed to supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer chaired a virtual meeting of the so-called “coalition of the willing” to brief allies on Monday’s discussions in Washington regarding Ukraine.

Following the meeting, Tusk wrote on X that leaders from Canada, Japan, Türkiye, New Zealand and a number of European countries had evaluated the outcome of talks held in Alaska “very realistically”.

He added that all sides reaffirmed the need for continued support for Kyiv, describing the session as “a good introduction to the European Council meeting that is just beginning”. The initiative, led by the UK and France, envisages the deployment of peacekeeping troops from several European and NATO countries in a post-war Ukraine.

Trump said on Monday that leaders had discussed possible security guarantees for Ukraine and that his administration had already begun preparations for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, followed by a trilateral summit including himself.

The Washington talks followed a Trump–Putin summit in the US state of Alaska, aimed at negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.
