Even though both are Hungarian and both are in Budapest, these restaurants are strikingly different. One thing is for sure, though: both are opening again.

Back in January, we listed some restaurants that fell pray to COVID. In the article, we talked about Kádár étkezde (Kádár canteen) and how it was not only struggling due to the pandemic but also was up for sale. Now, the restaurant is reviving and is opening in a week.

As can be read in our previously mentioned article, Kádár canteen had been a favourite with its red-and-white checkered tablecloths, soda bottles, and home-style flavours for more than 60 years before it closed in 2020 – what everyone thought would be forever.

Now, however, it seems that Sándor Orbán will not let the widely loved and cherished restaurant go to waste. After 33 years, he will hand it over to an operator who will take care of its traditions, as we can read in turizmusonline.hu’s article. Over the decades, many artists, athletes, politicians, and media workers visited the place, and hopefully, this will continue in the future as well.

The other restaurant that is opening again was Hungary’s first restaurant to get a Michelin star: Costes is rising from its ashes. Maybe not literally, since even though the restaurant was closed during the waves of COVID-19, for two years, only those who invited the restaurant’s staff to prepare and serve food in their own kitchens were able to enjoy the restaurant’s dishes.

As we can read in turizmusonline.hu’s article, the restaurant, which made fine dining history, opened its doors in 2008. Less than a year and a half later, it was awarded a Michelin star for its outstanding professionalism. Now, after two long and hard years, we are able to enjoy their excellent food again.

Also good news – and a surprise! – is that Jenő Rácz, a Hungarian star chef, is joining Costes’s staff to impress the domestic restaurant audience with his creativity and bravery when it comes to creating and styling dishes.

Find this restaurant here: 1092 Budapest, Ráday utca 4.
