Hungarian opposition calls for extended evictions moratorium
Opposition Párbeszéd has proposed that a moratorium on evictions should be introduced before winter and maintained until the end of the economic crisis.
Holding an online press conference on Friday, Párbeszéd MP András Jámbor cited a recent case in which a woman was evicted from her municipally owned apartment in central Budapest after she had failed to pay arrears of HUF 300,000 (EUR 708).
Jámbor cited the law on municipalities as saying that “no municipality shall make residents homeless” adding that the government of District 5 had offered the evicted woman a bed at a homeless shelter.
