Hungarian government says Ukraine’s EU accession would result in market loss for EU farmers

Agriculture Minister István Nagy warned that European Union farmers would face a massive loss of market share if agricultural products from Ukraine were allowed into the common market without restriction, addressing farmers in Monor, near the capital, on Thursday.

Nagy noted that Ukraine’s farm sector was ten times as large as Hungary’s and operated under different circumstances, pointing to the presence of GMO crops there and the use of herbicides and pesticides that had been banned in the EU for 20-25 years. He added that was a risk not just for European farmers, but for some 550 million consumers.

Nagy also highlighted the need for Hungarian farmers to protect their interests and take a stand on Brussels’ plan to change the role of area-based agricultural subsidies.
