Former Ukrainian Parliament speaker Parubiy shot dead

Andriy Parubiy, former speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, was shot dead in broad daylight on the streets of Lviv on Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the politician’s death on Telegram, calling the incident a “horrific murder..
The attack
Local authorities received an emergency call around noon reporting gunfire in Lviv’s Frankivskyi district, according to the Kyiv Independent. The 54-year-old Parubiy died at the scene. Suspilne reported that the suspected assailant arrived on an electric bicycle disguised as a courier and fired multiple shots at the former speaker before fleeing. Seven shell casings were recovered at the scene.
The police and the prosecutor’s office confirmed that a large-scale manhunt is underway for the attacker. The motive for the killing remains unknown.
Parubiy’s political career
Born in 1971 in Ukraine’s Lviv region, Andriy Parubiy’s political career was closely tied to the country’s recent history. He was an active participant in the 2004 Orange Revolution and later rose to prominence as the commander of volunteer defence units during the 2013–2014 EuroMaidan Revolution, according to Telex.
In February 2014, following the revolution, he was appointed Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council during the critical period when Russia annexed Crimea and instigated war in eastern Ukraine. From 2016 to 2019, he served as Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s national parliament.
Until his death, Parubiy was a member of the European Solidarity party led by former president Petro Poroshenko. In 2018, Russia placed him on a sanctions list, and he remained a frequent target of Kremlin propaganda.
Reaction to the killing
The Ukrainian political establishment reacted with shock to the news. Iryna Herashchenko, a European Solidarity MP, called the incident a “terrorist attack,” adding, “Andriy was one of the founders of modern Ukraine: a principled, patriotic, and intelligent man.”
Current parliament speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk also expressed his condolences, highlighting that Parubiy was a “consistent defender of Ukrainian statehood.”
Parubiy is survived by his wife and daughter.
